Ditto on that number (02) 8091 4668 - Indian guy who couldn't give me any details about the "accident" like which car, what date and where. I mean, how does anybody find out your home silent number if they crashed into your car, especially if you weren't there at the time?

Nowadays, anyone can buy a Oz phone number from anywhere in the world, and have it routed or redirected over the internet, very cheaply.

Hey Diane, I've had 2 phone calls today from these people. I asked aswell about details and he said the privacy thing too. I knew it was a scam so I told him the car was parked and nobody injured and he couldn't say anymore and left it at that.

Our family gets this scammer calling quite a bit, even though we tell them to bugger off. I see there are loads of complaints so what are the Federal Police/ Government doing about this.. I think there is enough complaints now to take this serious.. I am getting sick of being harassed by these Oxygen Thieves. I only hope no one falls for their Bull sh*t..

I too had a call from the Accident Squad. Man sounded Indian or there about. I told him no one here has had any accident in the last 12 months so he thanked me said 'bye bye' and hung up. Obviously trying to steal personal details off unsuspecting people to use for scamming. This is what happens when they outsource call centres to overseas countries.

just got a call from an Indian on (02) 8091 4668 claiming he was from Sydney claims about vehicle accident - asking exactly the same info as they have asked Gigi above. He eventually hung up and I called them back and they answered and said they were investigating a motor accident - I asked for name and type of car involved and he rattled off some Honda and a name of Nicky. I said no one here by that name and he politely said sorry must have wrong number and hung up.
SCAM SCAM SCAM why do these people continue to get away with calling Aussies!!!

Nice try "Allan". You are a filthy scammer and a criminal, regardless of origin. It's really sad that out of desperation to survive (in many cases) due to lack of opportunity and support in their own country these scammers find it necessary to dishonor themselves by choosing this as an option to financially support themselves and their family. Altho a bit of tolerance and compassion for these scammers who are trying to separate people from their finances would probably go a long way, at the end of the day.... don't give these dishonest organisations any reason to think they have potential for (dishonest) success by falling for their lies. Just feel sorry for them and hang up!

I to have been getting these calls, the person on the other end has an Indian accident, why can't our authorities trace where these calls are comming from and have them arrested with today's technology surely that can't be too hard. They also have background noise so it sounds like a call centre. These days I only give out my mobile number and if there is no caller ID I do not answer

I have had 3 phone calls the last 3 weeks - all from men and women with strong asian accents (potentially Indian). They state they are from the Accident Investigation Unit and have $20,000 to give me as a result of a claim lodged. When I asked questions, they said they were given my number by Sydney Claims Lawyers. When I started to ask questions, I got a 'supervisor' on the phone who became quite persistent that they wanted details in order to pay out my 'accident claim'. Because they were unable to give me any additional information about a suspected accident within the last 2 years or which car this was associated with, this was an obvious scam and I refused to give them any information. In the end, they hung up. Questions they asked were: my full name, date of birth, street address, car registration and wanted to know the same information about any other members of my household. Extremely persistent....

This scam is still doing the rounds, unfortunately. Received a call recently from someone following the usual script. I told them I was not interested [in anything they had to say] and hung up. I have not been called back from them again, so apparently that was enough to stop them from wasting their time on me.

Several people have asked how the scammers get our numbers. Usually they do not know that it's specifically your number at all. They use auto dialers that systematically call every number in a range of numbers. Some numbers will not connect, others will, and of the ones that get answered there might be a few people duped by their scam. That's how people with silent numbers can still end up getting these calls. You'd think that it would cost a lot to do this, but especially with VoIP services these days it doesn't. It's the same technology that "legitimate" telemarketers use as well.

Sometimes they might work their way through the phone directory, so if your number is listed you might be more likely to encounter a more convincing scam because they will know a little more about you, but generally, if you give them no information but ask them to name who they want to speak to they will have no idea, which suggests it's a cold call. Sometimes if you ask them what number they called they will have no idea as well because it's all done automatically.
