I had someone call me from this number today and ask about my neighbours - by name (although they got one name wrong) and gave me their house number. I said I had no idea who they were talking about and they hung up. I am glad I didn't say anything. If these neighbours have got a debt have the decency to contact them not go behind their back and harass others. Glad I told them nothing.

Good for you "debt collector", but this site is about Lion Finance and they are not ethical or reasonable and they buy debts for peanuts and harass people till they give up and either go bankrupt or worse, commit suicide. I have tried to deal with this company on behalf of clients and they tell lies, make threats and use any unethical means to get to you - even if you aren't the person they want. Going to neighbours, harassing people's parents or grandparents, bombing their facebook account is not ethical. I think everyone agrees if you get yourself into debt, you should do your best to get back out of it by working with your lender or the appointed debt collector. The problem becomes when they won't work with you and get nasty. Then, I say, to hell with them. Bankruptcy only lasts 3 years and I have clients who got loans as soon as they came out of bankruptcy and were told by the lenders that their credit rating was clean. They learnt their lesson and are now building their wealth.

The moral of the story is "co-operation" achieves far more than nasty, dirty tactics. The problem with companies like Lion is that financial planners, accountants and lawyers are now telling clients to deny the debt and don't take their calls so nothing is achieved. They also give other, more reputable debt collectors a bad reputation which means someone who would probably deal with you is now too scared to talk to any debt collector as they think you are all alike.

Debt Collector

As a debt collector myself, I do my best to not "harass" people. We work on behalf of companies and individuals, we don't buy debts (well the company I work for doesn't) We ask to confirm your address for data protection, if someone else other than the debtor answers the phone, legally we cannot tell them what the call is regarding - for privacy reasons obviously.
Debt collectors aren't arseholes, we are simply following up outstanding debts people owe, we are working on behalf of someone else. If people paid the debt they owed it wouldn't come to debt collectors. If you refuse to pay your debt. debt collector will take legal action and can get judgement against you - so your credit is f*cked for up to twelve years nationally. You won't be able to apply for a loan on a car or a house, in some cases you won't even be able to buy a mobile phone.

You got yourself into this situation and yes, our job is to collect the money for our client. We actually try and help people sort out their debt, so you can't say we're not compassionate. Yes, we have to be firm and forward with some people because those people are f*cking wankers who think they're invisible.

Moral of the story - our one and only job as a debt collector is to collect money that debtors rightfully owe to someone - debtors (people who owe the money) are thieves. So they're the ones who are low lives. Get your sh*t together and sort your debt out.

Full of Stupid Comments

Who is a moron "What a stupid comment"? Seems to me that a lot of you aren't even on here to get information, just abuse and ridicule people - maybe you should get a job with Lion Finance - you seem well suited to it. Let the bottom dwellers congregate at the bottom of the sewer where they belong.

Collecting money you are owed is one thing and there are ethical ways to go about this, but these parasites of the finance world wouldn't know an ethic if it bit them on the butt. If they behaved in a more reasonable, ethical manner, people might respond a bit better. Let the bastards fry!!!!

Got a call from "Matt". Wanted to confirm address. When I asked the name of the business he was calling from he replied he couldn't reveal that due to "a private business matter." So I responded I couldn't respond to him and hung up. Should use a blocked number if they can't reveal their company for "privacy" reasons - obviously haven't heard of Google! Disrupted my quiet afternoon.

Lion Finance - the bottom dwellers of the finance world. Buy out old debts and hound people, friends, neighbors, try adding you to Facebook, anything to squeeze you for money you may or may not owe.

Happy Rich Girl

You people are so funny! You scream and call people "losers" and "deadbeats" for being hassled by the debt collectors and yet, you do not have the facts of the case. Maybe you should all look up "famous bankrupts" - you would be surprised as to how many very successful people at one stage in their lives went bankrupt - they are definitely not losers or deadbeats - they contributed greatly to society.

I am being harassed by this phone number (at least 10 calls one week). I looked up the number as I did not recognise it and am very particular who I give my phone number to. When I found out who it was, I decided not to answer the calls as I have never needed nor had a credit card or a loan so it can't be me they are after. And if they want me to harass my friends, relatives or neighbours for them, I will not do this.

I have no respect for anyone who acts in this manner, regardless of the amount owed. If an individual acted like this towards someone who owed them money, the police would become involved, so why do corporations get to act like this with no redress. I suggest those being constantly harassed start recording the conversations. If they continue to call, I will consider seeking legal advice as I believe using a carriage service to harass or intimidate is illegal.

Outraged

I received a call from one of these twats today (had previously been calling and hanging up on my message machine but can count dozens of missed calls from them). The idiot asked who I was and what my date of birth was. I asked who he was and he replied that he could not tell me due to legal reasons. I then advised that there was no way I was telling him my date of birth until he told me who he was and what the call was about. When he refused I told him to stop calling me. He said that unless I gave him what he wanted he would continually keep calling me, so I turned the tables and told him if he called me again I would report him. I them called the number back and gave the receptionist (who is obviously green around the gills because she told me who she was from - Lion Finance) so I told her that their company had better not call again.

Have a Conscience

Having almost gone into bankruptcy, I would have thought you would be more understanding of how people can get themselves into trouble - the same way you did. The writer never said they wanted to take thousands of dollars, then laugh at the lender and not pay back. The writer did not even say that they owed the debt collectors. You really need to read the comments on this site properly. From your writing, I gather English is not your first language so maybe you did not understand. The writer is simply saying "don't judge when you don't know the circumstances". Maybe they are a financial counsellor who sees financial tragedies every day and knows what they are talking about, maybe they have also gone through tough times and is trying to stop the judgement with no knowledge.

I would never stoop to illegal tactics to collect money that is owed me, no matter how much. I have lent money to people and they have not always paid it back. But after some time of not being able to collect for various reasons, I simply walked away and chalked it up to experience. I do not live by the almighty dollar and consider some things far more important, like my self-respect and my morals.

Why are you even on this site if you are not being phoned by the debt collectors? This is a site to let people know who is calling from strange numbers, not for people like you to abuse and judge.

Why am I being phoned!

Got a call from this number, didn't know who it was so did a google search. I have stopped answering numbers I don't know as lately I have been inundated with telemarketers who somehow got my mobile number.

I thought this was where people found out who had called and the early comments show this is a number for Lion Finance who are debt collectors. I don't owe money to anyone. The later comments seem to be nasty and harsh and judgemental. Are there people out there who just monitor these website to make these comments as they don't seem to be helpful or provide any information? Maybe it is the debt collectors who monitor these sites and make these defensive, nasty comments. If you don't have any helpful information, why are you bothering?

Will answer the call next time to find out why they are calling me? Maybe it is not me they are after - from the comments here they phone anyone and everyone with a similar name, who lives where they used to live or who may be related to who they are chasing. Seems like a lot of trouble for little money in many cases.

Calm and Considered Debate Better than Defensive Insults

You sound very defensive. Why are you so judgemental? Are you angry that you paid off your debt and you think other people are getting away without fulfilling their responsibilities?

Planning ahead for the future is great - I have also planned ahead. I have income protection insurance, life insurance, disability insurance like a lot of people, but have become disturbed when finding out that insurance companies are now trying to deny claims for income and disability insurance which means that I may have planned, but there is no guarantee. A friend of mine is employed by the insurance companies to obtain evidence to deny these claims.

I have no loans, have always paid cash (except for my home which is now mortgage free), but don't judge other people when I have not walked in their shoes. I am sure I have done things in my life which other people may judge me harshly for.

I have read all the comments on this page and have found most are either people wishing to negotiate to pay their debts and the debt collectors won't do so in a fair and reasonable manner or people who are being harassed when they don't owe any money.

As for the insults which have upset you, it was merely being pointed out that you are judging without knowing all the facts.

Thoughtless Fools

If you actually look at the messages on this site, you will see that it is the BEHAVIOUR of the debt collectors which troubles most people, not a refusal to pay the money back. Also, a lot of people on this site are being hassled when they aren't even the person who owes money. I have been one of those people. It has taken many months and many phone calls to get them to stop calling me and I have no doubt they will start the calls again in a few months when a new person does an internet search and gets may name and goes "Oh, they have the name of the person we are after!". Ever since I got married and changed my name, every few months I get calls for someone with a similar name.

Have a look at what has been said. People are not saying "thanks for the thousands, too bad for you I am not paying it back". What they are saying is that the debt collectors won't negotiate in a fair and reasonable manner and even when they make an arrangement, they continue to harass you for higher and higher repayments until you can't afford to live.

Sick of Righteous Fools

I am not talking about me. I do not constantly borrow money nor have huge credit card debts. I am an accountant who has to daily deal with people with various issues. As I am trying to explain - you cannot plan for everything. Super is great, but most people cannot get their super until they are close to 60.

All I am saying is that not everyone's life is easy or straightforward. Having some compassion costs nothing and if debt collectors or banks were more reasonable most people would pay up happily. The fact is they aren't. They harass until people give up and go bankrupt which doesn't do anyone any good. Negotiation in good faith achieves far more.
