As someone who was asked to relay a message to a neighbour from Lion Finance this morning, and contacting the relevant govt. departments, I can confirm that it is NOT legal for Lion Finance to contact neighbours, friends, or any other party seeing to recoup monies owed. This is an invasion of my privacy as much as my neighbour's privacy, and a complaint has been made.

I just got a call asking me to leave a message for a next door neighbour. I don't have a fax machine, but if you provide an email address I can provide details.

Lion Finance is clearly operating outside the normal realms of business and extending into harassment. I received a message from an organisation where I volunteer my time and where my name is on a website as a participant. Lion Finance contacted the organisation asking for my contact details. The lady at the organisation stated they were quite pushy when she wouldn't pass on my contact details so she agreed to pass on a message. When I contacted Lion Finance I found they wouldn't provide any details regarding anything but were keen to get all of mine. They were also fishing as the first name they provided was different to the name listed on the website. Only the surname was shared. This was quite a stretch and suggests people should be careful where they agree to post their name and any other details for fear of opening themselves up to scammers.
If they are a debt collection agency and operating legitimately they would have more appropriate means of locating people in conjunction with the people from whom they bought the debt. Go away Lion Finance, you are annoying and have no business harassing people.

Scammers for sure

An unidentified caller left this 1800 708 124 number to call them with the real estate agent of my landlord. I have never heard of or used this number or the firm Lion Finance and have never borrowed money from any lender which has never been repaid in full, so I think that the whole thing is a complete scam. Have passed it on to Police for investigation. Naturally I never returned the call and never will.

Re the post from Cornerstone Legal, in the past Lion Finance has called my neighbors, also they are attempting to collect what I believe may be a Statuette Bared Debt. Additionally, under the "Access" Section of my Veda file, that do a check each month. Would these points be on interest to you on your Class Action suit?

I'm at the front desk of a small company and the person who has the 'debt' doesn't even work here! They have managed to find the persons ex-wife who works here all of which has nothing to do with the supposed debt.
Never give them permission to call back! They try and sneak in a verbal confirmation to make constant return calls and then they nag!

Call from strangers

No they do not have a legal right to call someone's neighbor and tell them to pass on a message. Note they would have got your number from some type of reverse directory not really legal to begin with. You are within your rights to report the call to Telstra and lodge a complaint that this is a nuisance call etc.

Had a message left from this number today asking to ring back "Pat" and quote a reference number. This is a scam, if they are supposedly debt collectors, I don't have any debt.

They have no right to harrass an individual over the telephone, they have no ownership of the medium. The telephony system is a means of contacting and thr receiver has every right to have the number blocked. You can ask your telephone company and they will forward calls to anumber that never answers. It's your right to have privacy regardless of what people may try to state is their right to recover owed monies one does not succeed the other.

Called my 80 year old mother to ask her if she could go up the street and pass on a message to the people in mumber 15. My mother lives at number 1 and doesn't even know the people at number 15. Even after she explained this the ignorant caller still pressed the issue trying to get an elderly lady to go and pass on a message. What I'd like to know is how did they get my mothers phone number.

I've had this mob call me 3 times this past week. They want me to pass a message on to a neighbour I don't even know. This is an unsolicited call, about an issue that has nothing to do with me and I certainly won't be doing their dirty work for them unless they send me a check to cover my freelance fees. The first call was from a *mate*, the second call from a *business associate* and the third call was regarding a private business matter. Dishonest misrepresentation at best, illegal use of a telecommunication device at worse.

Annoyed

I received a voicemail on my work phone from someone called pharrel asking me to call back with a caller reference number. I thought it was strange so googled the number and decided to call to see what they wanted. Straight away the phone was answered and they wanted me to confirm my date of birth. There is no way I would supply that information to him and demanded he tell me why he was calling me. He said that my GE account had been sold to him. I told him I had not received any notification and how did they get my work number as I had never used it for anything in relation to my credit card. He wouldn't explain, I told him if he wanted to contact me to call me on my mobile, email me or send me a letter. He goes haven't you received a letter? Can you confirm your address...I said no you can tell me what you have on file. He goes unit 3 blah blah greenacre. What an joke that is wrong address I don't even know where greenacre is or live in an apartment. So hung up on the fool.
I called GE to lodge a complaint they said it is a scam my account has not been sold and my credit card has not been compromised. I have also contacted the NSW fraud squad to make the aware of this scam. So if they call you Lion Finance is a joke and they don't have your information.

'help out get out of debt'. you're kidding right? They buy the debt for a % of the amount and make money off it. The customer service reps also get a commission of the debts they collect. It is about making money. They harass worse the GE

Just had a phone call today from this number, the man asked me if I knew a particular neighbour in my street (he gave me this person's first and last name). When I said that I didn't know them, they asked me to write down this number and drop it in the letterbox of the neighbour they were seeking. I had no idea what this was in regards to, but I'm quite unsettled to find out this is a debt collecting company..is this even legal? Why wouldn't the company just call the person in question?

They have brought a mismanaged debt from GE but it's regarding a debt for a friend and think it's appropriate I translate legal information for him? I don't even speak his language!!! The harassment is ongoing and there have been visits by intimidating men who don't identify themselves to women's homes.

It is not legal for them to harass any third parties in their efforts to harass people they're after. What they're doing amounts to serious harassment and is a blatant attempt to embarass people by involving work colleagues and neighbours. Visit https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/managing-your-money/managing-debts/dealing-with-debt-collectors, it details the methods they are permitted to use. Specifically:

Debt collectors can contact you in a variety of ways, for example, by phone, letter, email, social media or by visiting you in person.

Debt collectors must respect your right to privacy at all times. By law, a debt collector cannot reveal that they are a debt collector or provide information about your financial situation to another person without your permission.
