Likely the beginning of a scam. Sounds legitimate at first to gain your trust and if you answer, they'll tag you as an active phone number and will call you more from different scam numbers. Best approach is to ignore, or contact your bank directly from their website. Banks usually notify you of suspicious matters via text or email. No bank will hire a call centre to call their customers every single time there's a "suspicious" activity - stupid way to operate.

Caller: Claimed to be Coles Mastercard Security

This call was really creepy.
The caller claimed to be Coles Mastercard Security.
He asked for me by name, and identified correctly the date and amount of my last legitimate transaction (at a dental surgery).
He asked if I had a transaction the previous day with Employment Hero. I said "no" but said I would check.
He said to call back on the number on the back of my card.
I checked my account and there were no suspicious transactions.
When I called Coles Mastercard using the number on the back of my card, they had no knowledge of the suspicious transaction, and there was no record on my file from the security team.
So the call was either a scam or extremely bad behaviour by Coles.
But how on earth did the caller know my phone number, name, and my last transaction?
The caller didn't attempt to extract any information from me.
Was it just an attempt to soften me up for another call where they would need "urgent action to protect your account"?
Or will they put the attack into Coles? They know phone number (and can spoof it), name, my last transaction (and presumably the card number).
I'm really concerned about this.

Exactly the same scenario. He was concerned a zero transaction on my account. Be careful. He knew the last 4 digits of my wife's card, and the transaction was made from her phone. So why ring me.

Caller: Processing CC application

I had submitted a Qantas CC application the day prior, online.
I didn't answer the call & he left a voicemail stating the call was relating to my Qantas CC application with a reference number.
I don't know what that reference number related to and the 1300 call back number was not the number that is on the Qantas CC website so I called to number on the website.
I think it was genuine.

Claims they're from Citibank but jokes of them, I don't own a Citibank account. They leave a muffled voice message to call them back on 1300 304 387 on 2 occasions. Weirdly enough, the first time I got a voice message and the 387 was very muffled, and the second voice message from a different caller left a voice message also mumbling the 387. Whatever the number is, is besides the point but these scammers have been so desperate. These reviews saying it's real are lying. BLOCK!

I had applied for a suncorp credit card and submtted docs as part of this yesterday, today i got a call from this number claiming to be citibank and calling on behalf of the credit card verification team, they manages cards for coles, virgin, suncorp etc. (I asked the lady to give me context on what she does and why shes calling so she mentioned all that) - i was very suspicious but provided my reference number anyway to see where it goes - she then redirected me to the suncorp team. Once i was transferred I was relieved because I knew the lady I was transferred to was infact an employee for suncorp and she assured me that it wasnt a scam so all good. it was a standard part of verification.

This number is used by Citibank, as the outgoing caller ID number when they call you. They should generally leave you a voicemail with a 1300 number to call back on, which you can then verify the number is correct online. My call was from Citi's fraud prevention department. Suggest you call Citi bank on their official phone numbers.

I have had a couple of calls from this number in the past week. Every time the caller is so muffled they sound like they are talking through a pillow. I have told them they need to fix their phone system.

SCAM alert. This is a convincing message. Do not use any links or telephone numbers and block the number.

This sh*t has gone on long enough. Applied for credit card from Coles. five minutes l got a call from overseas call centre to verify all I had put in the application. Could not understand person and quality of call was hopeless. Transferred six times and they were just as bad, had to hang up. About time these useless bloody companies woke up, and if they want to use these frigging call centres get someone that can speak English, stupid bastards.

This is legit. The people saying it's a scam are panic merchants, who haven't actually checked it.

Got bounced from NAB to Citibank's phone lines when trying to call back after getting a silent voicemail. (not a customer of either bank by the way), sounds like a scam to me.

I received a call from this number but didn't recognise it, so I rejected it. And guess what? They didn't leave a voicemail. A good sign that it's most likely a telemarketing call (at best) or a scam. Besides which, I don't even have a Citibank account and never have!

This was the number that called me to follow up on a coles mastercard application. In my opinion it is legit. People who were called and said they don't even have that card perhaps it was an accidental call. Theres probably hundreds of staff calling all sorts of people all day. its bound to happen. As always though, be careful what information you share. and if in doubt, find their number and call if you are a bit suspicious.

It’s legitimate, I did apply for a credit card and they just needed to verify that it was me who applied for it and not someone else using my details to apply for it. Got the confirmation text and email from Citibank a few minutes after to confirm that my card application has been approved.
