I would like to augment a comment that I posted here a couple of days ago.

Firstly, consider how ridiculous an idea it would be for a call centre to be located in Martin Place in Sydney, in what I expect would be among the most expensive commercial real estate in the country. You quite possibly wouldn't even set up your call centre in Sydney. Somewhere smaller like Brisbane would be a more likely starting bet.

Secondly, the last time that these scammers called me, I engaged them (safely) and strung them out, and recorded a trace of the network activity while they were connected to my (virtual) computer. The publicly accessible WHOIS register showed that the IP address from which they were connecting to me was allocated to an Indian ISP, Sify Limited. The WHOIS register gives the full street address of that ISP's head office - it's in Chennai.

That doesn't mean that the scammers are in Chennai, though. Sify is apparently a national ISP (like Telstra, for example), so the scammers could be anywhere in India. However, if the scammers *were* actually located in Australia, why would they want to make it appear as if they were in India?

I had the same experience this afternoon. A lady with an Indian accent identified herself as calling from Windows. When asked, she said she was calling from an address in Martin Place, Sydney. She offered 1800 764 751 and practically begged me to call the number so as to prove she was legit. I didn't ring the number but kept her on the line for a while before hanging up.

If you go to YouTube and search for "Microsoft scam", you will see that there is a worldwide army of people (in the main Anglophone countries, which the scammers target) with the means to safely "scambait" these buggers - to act naive and string them along and waste as much of their time as possible. As long as a scambaiter has a scammer tied up, then at least (s)he's not scamming someone else who mightn't know better. I've already tied up two scammers this week for about 40 minutes each. Rest assured that there are people out there (who don't necessarily post videos about it to YouTube) who are working to make it a less than ideal day for any scammer unlucky enough to call them.

Very rude and pushy, claim to be from some kind of tech support company. Said we had a very serious problem with our windows operating system. she couldn't seem to tell me what kind of computer or what version of windows I was running. They say they in Martin Pl Sydney. Lady was called Kelly. She gave the number to call back and i didn't. She called back 2 minutes later very insulted that we didn't believe her and call her back. She called me a silly rude man. I messed with her for as long as possible

Caller: I assume a scam based on previous comments

So I'm calling from NSW Australia and I wanted to call for fun to see how much I can mess around with these scammers. A lady answers who calls herself Kimberly and has a perfect generic American accent. They say they are from Vision RT Helpdesk and ask me if I've called for customer support. I have no idea what Vision RT is...

Just had a call from Angelina 1800 764 751 said she worked for Windows, based in Mackay Queensland. Telstra had contacted them to call me because there was a problem with my computer. Heard someone coaching her in the background. Got quite rude when I would not cooperate.

I just nearly got caught, the ladys name was Claire, she gave me the 1800 764 751 number so I could verify her and said she was at Martins Place. I googled the phone number and found this site, thank goodness, she just rang me back and said I hadn't called her back I told her I had googled the phone number and found it was a scam and told her thank you very much

I had a call from my distraught (elderly) parents who had a call today 05/02/2016 from this person and claimed they were representing Microsoft technical support. Fortunately my parents did as I had suggested if they happened to get a call from these "SCAMMERS" and didn't let them gain access to their PC. They did manage to get the name and numbers ( Maria Anderson 1800 764 751 or (02) 8006 9015)

These people are so dodgy that credit card companies apparently won't deal with them.

I called 1800 764 751 today to prank them with the aid of a specially-built virtual computer. (Don't try this unless you know what you're doing.) "Marie Anderson" took my call, and wanted to get my phone number (which is blocked from display) and call me back. I insisted on being dealt with immediately, so she didn't get my phone number.

After connecting to my virtual computer and demonstrating my purported "problems", "Marie" presented me with some options for purchasing maintenance service from them. She firstly suggested that I send them a cheque. I said that I didn't have a cheque book because cheques are almost obsolete in Australia nowadays. She then suggested that I could go to the post office and send them a money order. WTF? I pointed out how last-century those payment methods were, and how any online business can take credit card payments. "Marie" ducked and weaved, and finally said that she would present me with a screen to make a credit card payment - at which point I would let her know that she'd been attempting to scam an IT industry professional.

However, the credit card screen never came. Instead, "Marie" said that they would go ahead and fix my computer, and call me back later - impossible, as they didn't have my phone number! We ended the call, and I watched them root around on my virtual computer for a while. It looked as if they might be downloading files from my virtual computer, but that's okay because there's nothing on it of any value - no personal details, no banking or credit card information, no passwords, just the bare software to enable the virtual computer to run and to play pranks with.

Imagine a business that is so disreputable that they can't even get facilities for credit card payments.
