Scam caller called now, Andrew said they were from Windows microsoft stating I had virus in my computer wanting me to log into my PC to fix it. They later stated they were from a company that subcontract out to windows service centre called linked to asset. I asked for a number to call back 1800 764 751, just did a google search and found this. They ask for my name, I did not give that. Not calling them back. I am not network linked to windows so logical why or how would they know I have errors on my PC or know. Don't call back and don't give them access to your PC

No, it's not for real. If you are cold-called by someone claiming to represent Microsoft, or Telstra, or "Windows", claiming that your computer has viruses, or is downloading corrupt files, or is disrupting the Internet with infections, or is at risk of imminent failure, and so on, just hang up.

You won't get such calls from legitimate businesses because they wouldn't even know whether your computer had viruses, or was at risk of imminent failure. Your computer is NOT sending distress messages to anybody's "secure server" or "main server". Such callers don't even know whether you have a computer, or of what kind. They're just randomly calling people because they know that many (if not most) Australian households will happen to have a Windows-based computer under their roof.

They might also threaten to "block" your computer from the Internet if you don't cooperate with them. That is also nonsense. Don't take any notice of it. Only your ISP can cut off your Internet access.

In short, Paul, don't give them personal information, and don't let them connect to your computer. Just hang up on them, and nothing bad will happen.

Just had Christine from this dodgy phone number call me. I tied up the line as long as I could and gave her a lot of circular answers to her questions. I get a scammer call almost everyday at 1:50. They get very pushy and rude when they don't get what they want.

I had a call from Carol from Microsoft in Sydney. Asked for contact phone which she gave me easily 1800 764 751. I asked how I got onto this list to call and how they knew I used windows, she said their development team found out. I wanted to know how she knew contact etc. and she rattled off my full name and full address, this was a surprise that they had all that information. She wanted me to got into Computer and the manage button. I asked her if she was trying to gain access to my computer and she said no they wanted to help to rid virus stuff. I asked why my name on this list and she said that they want to see which part of Australia have the viruses worse! Had enough by this point, very aggressive and pushy

I have had a very persistent Grace on the line, kept ringing back trying to get me to get in front of my computer which she said had many viruses and was about the crash. So of course I looked to see if windows defender had come up with anything and of course my computer was clear of any problems, I suspected this was a scam but reading the above conforms it to me. Its very worrying that these people have so much detail about you.

Just had a call from an Indian man "Samuel" from 'Linked to assist from windows 419 Martin pl Sydney 100764751. Said our computer IP address was sending virus messages to windows!! Total scam. I played a long for a while to get info for here, but apparently these people seem to be well documented. They asked if I was in front of a computer with it on and then wanted me to type commands so he could show me how to get rid of the virus (which would have given access to my computer) Very persistent, even saying you don't seem to trust me maam, but I have worked here for many years.

Mary, it is very easy for anyone to get your name and address. There are companies that run businesses who sole purpose is to collect and collate data on individuals. They are supplied this information from your bank, insurance company, medicare, charities you donate to and anyone else you may do business with (read the really, really, small print at the end of all documents). These companies then sell their databases to anyone who wants to pay for them.

So there are innumerable companies and telemarketers and scammers out there who have your details.

Just got a call from John Williams (Indian Person) very Australian name for a very Indian person asking me if could fix my windows problem. I humoured him for a while but when he asked me to input a web address into my computer and at that point I asked if I could call them back on their number. John gave me this 1800 number and I called it straight back; If it is a Microsoft tech support I would expect to get some sort of answering machine and all I go was another Indian person called John Parker. I told him that I will not be progressing with sorting out my computer with them. I called them back again on the same number and got another John and said that I would be reporting them to the authorities John said that is fine with them. Scam Scam Scam

Just received call in Brisbane.
Surely the number can be shut down? That would reduce their credibility at least. He wouldn't give me a normal land line. I just looked up the 1800 number and found this page.
'William' told me the company was linktoasis and that they had a website of that name.I don't have enough time to set up a sandbox and check, but would have hoped sites can be marked as scams by search engines or even blocked by telecoms providers.

I also got this number from a woman who called herself Clare with an Indian accent claiming to from a computer service department in Martian pl Sydney. I played along and made her wait when she told me to count the number of errors in the event viewer eventually I told her my computer was still under warranty and I would take it back to shop where I bought it. Just be aware people that these people are still out there with the same old scam.
