Caller: Telstra I don't usually answer calls from unknown numbers, letting it go to the voicemail. Whoever left this message had such heavy accent that all I could understand after several goes was "This is Rebecca" and "We tried to contact you". We did have mobile outage for couple of days, so after reading all the comments below, I decided to listen to the message again and could just decipher "from Telstra". Telstra, please train your call centre staff to speak slowly and distinctly. mumbling something in rapid monotone shows total lack of interest in your customers. I have an accent myself, I and I take it into account when I talk to people who are not used to it. Basic curtesy.

Caller: I agree with you but Telstra staff don't always leave voicemai messages, believe me, I've requested them to leave me a message to their missed call but they don't. It's hard to tell between incoming calls from legit organisations to scammers. I always ask organisations & businesses to text me before they will call me for assurance. Thanks for sharing your experience & helping us all be familiar with what's happening & who's calling us. This number called me twice in a short space of time at 6.30pm weekday. Didn't let their call ring my phone for long & hung up. Didn't leave a text or voicemail message.
As for Telstra service & any service, we should stop giving them out date of birth for verification, instead ask them for other options of verification. This will minimise our risk of scammers having our confidential & important details.
Thanks everybody for sharing & cautioning others.

Caller: supposedly Telstra This number has sent text messages all week about calling in 5 minutes re reference no 52102080 for fault complaint to Telstra. I just happened to be on a call with a Telstra technician about said fault when text came through again today, so definitely a scam. Ref. no was incorrect as well. Have now blocked this caller.

Caller: Telstra This is a legitimate Telstra number. I've been dealing with them for a mobile phone fault in my area, and they knew the details. It did sound like it was a call from an overseas call centre, but a lot of Telstra's call centres are offshore, so this likely explains a lot of the above complaints - e.g., hearing voices in the background, or calling on Christmas Day, etc.
Yes, it comes up as a number from NSW, even though it's likely a call centre. But that's not that surprising. Would you answer if it was from a private number, or from an Indian number? Most likely not, so what would you like them to do?
So, definitely Telstra, albeit not the best call centre experience I've ever had.

Caller: Telstra Telstra sent me a text saying someone would call regarding my coverage complaint within 5 minutes. This number then called. He asked my name date of birth and address. I replied ‘to many scams going on mate I’m not answering that’ he then said does your date of birth start with 23 😳 then is this your address 😳. He then said I understand everyone thinks we are scamming. We then talked about the coverage complaint and he gave an update on the fact it would be 3 months before coverage would improve. He did suggest I purchase an antenna and I said no. He accepted that and said that there’s nothing more they can do. So in summary I did make a complaint and they did call so I am saying it’s legit. Yes he talked fast yes he was from India and yes there were other operators in the background.

It is the 61 2 before the 9461 9000 that is the give away - why would an Australian caller have the international code at the beginning of their number? I also have just background talking ...

Caller: Telstra Definitely Telstra. I was suspicious because this guy talked fast & had a heavy accent. I heard the word Telstra, so got him to repeat, then heard 'this morning...' He asked for my name & DOB to confirm my ID. I said how do I know you are from Telstra, that's why I am on this website! I did call Telstra this morning & the Aussie gent could not reinstate my recharge credit expired by Telstra yesterday, that is supposed to expire 11Feb23, he said he would log a job. Wonder if anyone else has this problem. Telstra discontinued my prepaid mobile plan in Feb & converted it to similar plan, not as good of course, credit to expire in 366 days. Yesterday, got text to say recharge has expired & needed to recharge to continue to use service!! I could not make call or send text, not even to Telstra!! Lucky we still have a landline!

Caller: (02) 9461 9000 Of this number is Telstra then why don’t they leave a msg instead of just breathing?!! It’s not Telstra. I’ve had Telstra call and they ALWAYS leave a msg then try my landline. I have a very private landline barely anyone but Telstra and family has it so I KNOW this number ISNT Telstra! I’ve also had ‘Telstra’ supposedly send me sms msgs too and it wasn’t them even though it says it’s from Telstra! Scammers are good and they infiltrate everywhere! Convince me this is Telstra as it’s not, they’d leave a msg not just them breathing for two mins!
