I had logged a faulty line with Optus a few days earlier and they called me to say it had been fixed. Was legit.

This number now belongs to the Optus Pre Activation team. You can't call inbound to this number but customer service calls are made to people who are waiting for their Optus service (such as ADSL) to be connected

Optus technical department confirmed it was NOT their number and in fact Optus confirmed it wasn't their number either. Here is what I found:
This information was obtained from reveal name. It seems they call offering deals and the number has been in service for over three years. I highly recommend NOT to call this number, I repeat do not call this number as Optus does not recognize it.

The caller rang from (02) 8049 8945- knew my first name then wanted me to confirm & provide further personal info. When I asked who this was- said from Virgin (who do use Optus telco) & were calling me to.. I cut this person off & said if you are from where you say I will find you on Google now- line went dead then sounded like underwater? Then called back on (02) 8049 6150 - I did not pick up - BE CAREFUL! I am currently within a 3 year saga of being hacked, stalked etc & this was yet another call that just did not make sense other than to extract personal information!! - which if it was legit they would have this!!

Caller: Scammers These people have cloned a real Optus support number. I received a call offering me a 20% discount off my bill and asking me identifying questions so I hung up. I then contact Optus via phone and online chat who confirmed they had not rung with any offers and there is nothing on file for my account. They did not seem concerned that someone has cloned their phone number which worries me. Also weird fact- the online chat member said that the phone call team have different offers and discounts to them?? No idea why. They suggested I ring customer service after chatting to them in case they had a different promotion running.

We had 3 calls from this number within 2 minutes, one to our landline and two to our mobiles. All three hung up when the phones were answered.

This number is not optus the scammers are writing that (f*cki** a**holes seriously) I've been hacked by these people- Do not give out any personal information! block the caller and report them asap AND do not open texts or LINKS unless you are 100% they are not from an unknown source. (for example if your bill is not due- and you get a text saying it's due----DON'T click)
They knew my contact was up with vodaphone (BIG company who's employees do not protect your personal information) they called pretending to be a vodaphone employee ( I spilled my personal info- I trust no one now btw***) they then took over my simcard on another phone- Useing my phone # to reset all my passwords! since my partners phone plan was in my name they were also able to hack him!
Once they have your number your pretty much screwed! make a new generic email, get a new provider - stop trusting people (as I learned) and gain control of your virtual world! don't let these low life's get the best of you :-) some of us actually have real jobs "trying" to earn a decent living!

Caller: Scam call I received this call at 6pm .i didn’t pick up as I think it is scam. They call me back immediately, so I picked up. They said they are Optus and give me some updates on the nbn . they can tell my full name and address. Starts ask me my dob. I never tell personal detail to unknown call. I ask what’s the purposes of the call, she kept saying telling me nbn update. Why I need any updates? I said unless you sending me black and white email showing you are calling from Optus , I won’t give you any personal details . Then I hang up. One minutes later, I received an Optus sms, message said”Please urgently give us a call to booked a new appointment for NBN, the appt. for 20/02/19 has been cancelled due to technician availability - Optus, Jazz”. I immediately online chat with Optus and they said they didn’t cancelled the appointment. I guess may be the scammer stole my information from Optus.
