A random call from an Indian sounding Shaun Watson, called his company the Windows Service Centre. Knew my name & address which concerned me. I smelled a rat straight away and was pretty fierce with them from the start and asked them to prove themselves.
Answers:
Company Name: Log for Help Windows Service Centre Address: 121 KingsWilliam Street Adelaide
Employee ID: 104
I wanted to call them back to verify who they were, he told me to ask for Betty who would put me through to him.
He said he was wanting to upgrade my software, that there were some issues of expired certificates.
He thought I was using Vista (Nope it was XP but I didn't tell him that).
He proceeded to tell me that my certificates needed upgrading and I should check out the issue.
So I humoured him & steered through his instructions taking careful notes.
First was a DOS shell and type in "Assoc"
At the bottom it displayed a CLSID. I got him to read it out and it was correct, which surprised me.
Then asked me to run "certmgr.msc" and view the untrusted certificates.
He then wanted me to grant him access to my computer via http://www.ammyy.com/en/. Hell no!
I kept asking why this was so important, got bumped to at least two different indians (one posing as the Federal Police asking me why I was so rude to them) and then back to the original guy.
He was talking over the top of me and kept asking Do you want my help or not...Yes or No? Whilst not answering his question I dialled (02) 6100 4030 with 1831 in front of the number to block my mobile number. At first the call was answered by an Indian (sounded like someone's residence) then it hung up. This Shaun hung up my call when I had started a conversation with someone a second time and had it on speaker and asked if Shaun could hear the conversation. I persisted and asked for Becky, after two different people "Becky" took my call and said that she couldn't put me through to Shaun, when I got agro she put me through to a guy who said he was Shaun. When I said that he didn't sound like Shaun, he admitted I was talking to a Shane, employee id SW1120 and that Shaun hadn't worked there for some time. He wanted to steer me through the same garbage about the CLSID and the certs as the other and I said I'd been through it. He then said he'd put me onto Nancy, the technician. When I spoke to her she claimed her name was Nancy Smith, even though she sounded like an indian. I asked her what the name of her company, even got her to spell it - Technext. I then asked her for the webaddress and with some delay whilst she had to "find it" told me it was http://www.livewindowssupport.com/ (got her to spell it for me) No office in Adelaide nor Sydney but Dunkeld Victoria and somewhere in the U.S.
I said I'd check out the website and call her back, she was angling for a return number. No way!
What a load of utter bullsh*t! Beware people!

Employee ID 104,

This smells really bad.

Get the AFP to follow the money right to these fraudsters, give them all hard labour and confiscate their property. That will send out a message loud and clear. Alternatively bring back the stocks and lash, maybe even the rattan.

Father had a call from Mr. Brown telling him that he was eligible for an Appreciation grant of $7000 from the Australian Tax Office due to long standing good credit. He was supposed to call (02) 6100 4030, speak to someone and quote a Grant approval number. He called B**lSh*t and rang the ATO, and the ACCC. Apparently the number is linked to a scam group somewhere in New Delhi. Due to jurisdiction issues the Aus Govt can't press charges and the Indian govt can't because no crime has been committed in India. Total scam. Waste their time next time they ring by asking them to repeat everything 5 or six times, spell things out and keep going over the same thing!

My call from a number which didn't show on my display was announced with foreign accent, as from the Australian Tax Office. I was issued an ID number And directed to call Kristen Hyland at 026004030 for further instruction to claim $7.000.00.

I was called by someone with an Indian accent called James Brown telling me that I was eligible for an Appreciation grant of $7000 from the Australian Tax Office. I should call (02) 6100 4030, speak to Christina Halland and quote Grant approval number A651 to get the paperwork underway. Instead I called the Australian Tax Office on the number listed on their website. They confirmed that there was no such grant. I have reported to them that someone is impersonating their employees.

This is a bi-product of all our telcos outsourcing their call centres to these countries. They have a trained workforce who know how to run call centre scams.

same as above from pushy indian "Mark Miller" from www.lozmein123.com. We're all the lucky ones to wake up to it in time, I wonder how much misery these a------s create to those that don't.Shame police services are so busy with speed cameras they apparently don't have resources to jump on this stuff
