Valid number for ATO lodgement team - usually requesting a call back if late in lodgments BAS or tax returns.

Beware...had no real details... tried to update everything as far as address and phone number. Alarm bells went off when 'Don Soby' from Adelaide asked for the phone number that they had called me on... I was actually asked what number they had just called....

This is definitely a legitimate ATO number, related to business / company lodgements. You can also call the main ATO number and be transferred across if you have any concerns.

I had a call from 1300 661 508 leaving a message from Australian Taxation Office (ATO) about late Business Activity Statement (BAS) lodgement. I thought it was a hoax, but it turned out to be legitimate follow up for not lodging BAS and tax returns. They can prove their identity without you revealing your Tax File Number (TFN). They were very reasonable and helpful. They could have charged a fine for late lodgement, but because the business had been inactive for a long time, they did not charge and were very reasonable.

Hi Sarah
The 1300 661 508 number is legit, however appears unusual you got disconnected. You can call the ATO Personal line on 13 28 61 (verifiable in white pages) and they will be able to confirm contact attempt and why they were calling you.

Yes this is definitely a real ATO number. They called and left me a message to call them back. I then called the usual 132869 number and told them about it. They then transferred me through to that number. The girl at that number said yes it was them. I sorted out my problem and it was nothing in the end, but always be careful with any numbers. Ring the 13 number rather than the one they left.

My mum received NO caller ID and asked how to call back, 1300 661 508 was given. I called this number back, auto machine answered claiming this is ATO and asking for TFN to be keyed in...which I don't have... after a little while a male answered and also confirm that they are ATO, and asking for TFN. I said I don't have and can you search by name & DOB, he hesitated but ok. After I gave name & DOB, he didn't say anything and this call was put on hold for a few minutes and then disconnected. I don't think this is a legitimate call...

This a legit ATO number to do with late lodgements for Income Tax, BAS, etc. Called number back, very helpful and understanding.
But if you are still unsure, call the main number and they can put you through once they know your details.

The ATO has a number you can call to report scams or check if the number you have been asked to ring is genuinely the ATO.
1800 008 540
Got the number from the caller as well as the ATO web site.

it is valid, just ring the ATO and confirm. It is for late BAS lodgement. I owed nothing, just forgot to lodge BAS. If you have mygov, you can login and confirm this. In fact lodging a nil activity statement takes all of 5 seconds online no joke. As a bonus, I see in the superannuation section you can consolidate super accounts online now. Yes, I had someone with a strong Asian accent ring too and ask for TFN/ABN on voicemail. It doesn't help that there ARE a lot of scamcallers with Asian accents. I get these about 1-2x per month.

Yes it is legitimate, and the ATO was courteous - it is not a scam. Definitely call them back, as it was just sorting out a small matter.

Rabin is definitely an employee of the TPALS (Tax practitioner and lodgement strategy) area and this is a direct number to the lodgement area of ATO. We are NOT scammers on this number and we get our information from our secure ATO records on file. People make our jobs very difficult when they get on sites like this and try to discredit us. If you just called back like you were asked to, you would have found this out to be genuine.

I received phone message on behalf of my son to call 1300 661 508
I rang number but did not input any information

They asked me stuff to identify myself

Then I asked them to give me my sonsw TFN - which she was able to do

She said that he owed $10k that was due to 2014 2015 2016 years

I said thats impossible because he lives overseas

She said that this was auto generated BAS debt installments because he had earned money the year before 2013

I think that this number is really ATO because NO ONE would have been able to give me his TFN if they were not real

They knew my name, even though I am not in the phone book. Asked for my Tax File Number as identification, or ABN,and date of birth. I have seen on the Tv, that the TAX office said they rarely phone. There have been scams on Current Affair. I asked this lady to send me a letter. She had very good English, but with an accent. She said the tax office were doing a drive on overdue taxation lodgement. . When I asked her if it was a scam, she got agitated. and gave me the 1300 661 508 number, said I had 2 business days to call. Its sounds scam like to me, so will be ignoring.I am sure if they really want me they will find other ways to contact me.

This is definitely the number for the ATO lodgements and Compliance area. The 1300 number is not available on the website as it would make it much easier for scammers if this number were readily available for them to use. Having said that, it seems that some scammers are now using this number when contacting people. If you are concerned, call the number back when you have been contacted and identify yourself using the voice activation identification, which is absolutely not availabe to scammers.

Our Receptionist just took a call from a "Franis Castillo" from the "ATO" who was asking if this was "x" company. She confirmed. He said he needed to speak with someone who handles the finances as he was after our company Tax File Number. She declined to give out that information. He then asked for my name (I am the Finance Manager here) - she gave it to him. He then asked for my personal address - she said she was not at liberty to give out those details. He then asked for hers - that's when she asked him to call back. He gave her the number of 1300 661 508 and asked for me to call back, but that he wouldn't be personally answering the phone.

Today they tried me too; a middle aged woman with what might have been an Indian accent left a voice mail asking me to contact the 1300 number and to have my TFN and ABN ready when I call. I googled the 1300 number first as I wanted confirmation it was the ATO and came to this site; I called ATO and they confirmed the 1300 number is not theirs; I then completed a scam report for this number with the ATO. I contacted my accountant who confirmed there are no outstanding issues with ATO and that I am the second of his clients today to be tried by this same scam. I rang the 1300 number without leaving my details and was impressed by the scale of the preparation these people have put into the scam. There are digital recordings and voice prompts for dialing numbers to select services very similar to those you hear when you call the ATO; with Australian accents. This one is elaborate.
