Was a Scammer ATO never tried to contact they give u this number to check then after you have checked it out on line they ring back for further details

I just called this number back after having a voice message left on my phone yesterday. Though the call I received was from a blocked number (hence why I didn't answer it yesterday), the message did say to call the ATO, and gave some specific details about my message only the ATO would know. I called back and was wary about giving my personal details (because of this website), but it was definitely the ATO. Not a fraud number. They will call back again, though, if you don't call them.

No missed call but this sms saying they called , so jumped on here to check …1800 008 540 called. 1 Voicemail message was left. To listen visit optus.voicemail-update.com/?id=inbox on your mobile phone.
Didn’t listen to it and now deleted message .

1800 008 540 is a legitimate ATO number that is written in their website for verification whether the person who called is a scammer or not. You can see this number in the ATO website.

So I heard someone I know getting a call from Anna Malecki from the tax office. Does that mean she is legit?

Was scammed so wanted to call ATO website, this number came up and looked legit but it is a SCAM. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER.

The caller spoke slowly and clearly claiming to be from the ATO he gave me an option of calling his direct number or this number 1800 008 540 and stated I should call it straight away
He provided a reference number not so different to another noted below, any way I found this forum and decided to give it a miss.

I just got called from ATO just like the rest, lucky I asked to verify and again they gave me the 1800 number. I was almost going to give them my details.. it all sounded so real - but then again - that's what Scammers do!!!

As above comments. However it truly is ATO. The number 1800 008 540 is listed on their website under the scam watch section.
"If you think you are a victim of a tax-related scam, phone us on 1800 008 540 between 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday."
So ... best to phone them and sort out ...

had this phone call from the ato wanting my company details and my name, gave them nothing as they deserve anyway, gave me a receipt number for the phone call of 1051576847714, also a return phone number to call them of 1800 008 540 and 1300 466 839, told me not to ignore this phone call as it was of great importance.
very clever scam indeed using the ato phone number, people be very careful

Similar story here. Brad Beasley - Australian voice, wasn't playing the game so asked for a number to phone back on - gave me the same 1800 008 540 number and a receipt number. Initially asked that he would need my TFN number even though he was calling in regard to a business that doesn't have my name attached to it - you would think they would at least get the facts correct ha ha!

Same process as those above advised calling re ABN and asked for my date of birth. Knowing this was not the advise provided in the media by the Tax Office I refused and was provided 1800 008 540 number to ring to verify. I was also advised I would receive a text message that has been sent with a different number 1300 650 286 to call. I advised if they could explain what the call was about I might be less sceptical, with the response being it would breach my privacy.

I find this very irregular and if the tax office has a query they have my details and that of my accountant who they can contact me through.

have been getting automated voice messages asking to call back on random numbers. Today got a call from 1800 008 540 with same message.

A computer recording claiming to be from the ATO saying I have outstanding taxes and this is the last warning - I don’t !

I also received a call from no ID number. Male stated his name was Bill Cawlis from Australian Taxation Office and he said the call would be recorded etc. He stated that the call was in relation to our company and he provided the correct name of the company. He then wanted me to provide some identifying information which I refused. He then gave me the phone number 1800 008 540 to verify his identity and he said that he was from the Stronger Action Team located in Box Hill with an extension of 23753 and also provided me with a receipt ID 1051485071046 and in closing said I should call this number straight away. Of course I did not call the number he provided however I google searched and read this forum which suggests the call is a scam. I agree that the ATO would provide a written letter if there was any issues with our company/taxation.
