The phone number 1300 650 286 is legitimate for ATO in conjunction with a PIN which needs to be entered to be transferred to the officer managing your case (refer ato.gov.au/scams)

However the phone number would NOT show as a caller ID - all legitimate calls from ATO will appear as private number.

I received an email claiming to be the ATO with this number, telling me to call this number by a certain date. Found it in my Spam folder, after the date. When I called, the auto responder said I would get a call back. I did not, still waiting, 3 weeks later. They did not contact me through the my.gov.au site, which is where I got my official response saying I owed them nothing. What the heck is going on with these people, now the ATO site claims I owe them thousands, even though I am on the pension. No explanation offered why I now owe money.

Do not bother reading the whole message trail. It is a scam - stop wasting your time and energy.

I was scammed into providing my ID information, before being told that my tax return would be released. I wish I’d thought to provide false info to check them.

Just to clarify, there are some scams going on around this number but the 1300 650 286 is legit. You can look it up under the ATO website.

There are 2 situations:

1) This number (or one that looks like it) pops up on your CID -> It's an automated message -> you stay on the line or press #1 - > connected to a someone blithering on about a fake debt. They do not give their name, and offer no client refence information THIS IS A SCAM.

2) You receive a call from an UNKNOWN number -> It's a human being who identifies themself (gives their name) and advises they are from the ATO. They will give you this phone number AND A CLIENT PIN that you can call back on. You don't have to do anything straight away, and can always say that you are unsure about the caller, and want to call them back through the ATO main switch. They will always agree, and give you a CRN (reference number) and a client pin. If you don't trust the pin and use the Reference number at the main switch, you can still get to your case manager.

Tips for staying safe:
• Never give out personal info during the first phone call. Always ask for a call back number and match it to the ATO website. ATO peeps are considerate of this, and will always accept the call back option through the main switch. Scammers will always try to give you another line "more direct" number which cannot be found on any ATO official pages.

• If it's about a debt: Check your myGov. Any tax amounts owing will be listed there, as well as any letters about whatever issues you may or may not be facing. Alternatively, check with your accountant/registered tax agent if you have one, they can see your tax debt status and if they ATO has issued anything pertaining to debts.

Signs the person on the other end is total BS:
-They don't like a call back
-They threaten jail straight away
-They don't mention the privacy statement at the beginning of the call
-They try to get you to make a payment over the phone in the first call
-They get uppity if you say you'll talk to your accountant or sort the debt through myGov (which you can do, organise your own payment plan online through myGov)

Something for fun:
ATO staff are required to read you the Privacy policy statement if asked, so see if you realise the person on the other end is a scammer, get them to do it as well. Go make a cuppa and just let the phone run in the background as they frantically google and then read it out.

Sadly this number is safe and is for the ATO - Audit Department.
For some out there that may make it feel unsafe but it is not scammers. The scammers apparently use 01300 650 286, note the ‘0’ at the start.
I rang the ATO Customer Services line 13 28 61 as I had received an SMS prior to receiving a package containing documents printed on a bubble jet printer with slightly blurry ATO headers and nothing had appeared in my MyGov, ATO or private email inboxes.

Whilst this is a genuine ATO phone number the call and any associated texts are scams. If in doubt ring the ATO scam alerts number on 1800 008 540 and they will confirm whether or not the call is legitimate

They had left a message Said that I was being investigated by not to sure as it sounded like RTO to push 1 to answer this call or else some threat was offered . I did not answer with pushing ones but deleted the message . I do have their number as above. I knew it was a scam after reading other experiences with this robot voice which was a recording. These people need locking up and the key thrown away. I am an elderly person
And the police and scam watch have warned us about this type of call

This is a scam. The caller pretends to be the Australian Tax Office and says you have committed tax fraud and will be arrested. First, you will receive an automated message asking you to hit "1" to talk with someone. After you do that, someone with a foreign accident will answer and ask for your personal details. When I asked the individual for their personal name and told them I thought the call was BS, they immediately hung up. This happened in the morning of Dec 6. Later in the afternoon, the number called again.
