ATO communicates in writing not over the phone. You discuss things after getting written communication. Scam and its Scam who is sayings its not fake ID's responding to your questions.

Of course it's a scam. Been going a long time, so they must find it worthwhile.
How to handle it? Easy. Hang up. Look up the ATO's number in White Pages (eg.) and phone the ATO. Tell them about the call to you. If the call is genuine, no harm done because you have called the ATO. If the call is a scam, no harm done because you haven't spoken to the scammers.
Same rules apply every time you get a call that might just might be a scam.

I only deal with written requests from the ATO and not phone calls. I checked with my accountant and this is a scam

Just received a couple of calls from pretend ATO. ID Withheld. The man sounded so sincere, he asked If I would like to have the conversation recorded. "No" was my reply. he obliged and told me it was turned off. He then asked me if I would like to hear the privacy statement I said "Yes". It was not a recording he read it word for word from a privacy statement for 2 or 3 Minutes. Almost wet myself laughing before I hung up.

I love how many people are claiming its a scam. If you got here you probably googled the number and ignored the ATO link that says it is an ATO number. Logic much?

Not a Scam, you can call the ATO from a number on their Website and confirm if there was a call back, when they leave the 1300 466 859 number its the ATO and its real.

You're a tax agent? You're dumber than dog sh*t. The number is legit. You don't lock in a voice print as a tax agent, thats the process.

Anyone who calls (without exception) that has a 1300 number is a scammer. I have ALL incoming 13 calls blocked.
