They just rang me claiming they were from ATO the early intervention unit. Rang me at work using my real name (rather than the name most people call me) and then went on to tell me that they had tried contacting my daughter who has a different last name about money $4051.90 she owes ATO. Gave me their number! Really weird. Certainly went to great lengths!

Caller said from ATO in regards to superfund. I said give me your phone number. Then gave me 1300 466 859. Then I called ATO who checked and said yes, there's a call recorded contacting you in regards to an outstanding debt from a previous years tax returns.

It is not fake. The number is listed on the ATO's website https://www.ato.gov.au/about-ato/about-us/contact-us/phone-us/ on a contact table (scroll down to "Debt and Lodgement" - it's there). The phone call/leave a message approach has been very poorly done by the ATO. I almost ignored the call because of the comments on this page. If you are still uncertain contact the ATO on their main number 13 28 29 with a Debt and Lodgement enquiry.

Of course it's a scam. Been going a long time, so they must find it worthwhile. How to handle it? Easy. Hang up. Look up the ATO's number in White Pages (eg.) and phone the ATO. Tell them about the call to you. If the call is genuine, no harm done because you have called the ATO. If the call is a scam, no harm done because you haven't spoken to the scammers. Same rules apply every time you get a call that might just might be a scam. And get onto reverseaustralia.com

I only deal with written requests from the ATO and not phone calls. I checked with my accountant and this is a scam

Just received a couple of calls from pretend ATO. ID Withheld. The man sounded so sincere, he asked If I would like to have the conversation recorded. "No" was my reply. he obliged and told me it was turned off. He then asked me if I would like to hear the privacy statement I said "Yes". It was not a recording he read it word for word from a privacy statement for 2 or 3 Minutes. Almost wet myself laughing before I hung up.

I love how many people are claiming its a scam. If you got here you probably googled the number and ignored the ATO link that says it is an ATO number. Logic much? Keep your ignorant opinion to yourself.

That phone number and department are listed on the ATO.GOV.AU website, link below. https://www.ato.gov.au/About-ATO/About-us/Contact-us/Phone-us/
