The ATO itself isn't very helpful in shedding any light on this. Rang their 'fraud info line' on 1800 008 540 and asked whether the voice message I received to ring them on 1300 466 859 was legitimate. He said "probably not" as he couldn't see that number anywhere on their system. He then logged into my account and verified that the ATO had in fact called me at the exact time of said voice message, and then went on to say that 1300 466 859 was actually a legitimate number and he had "overlooked" it before. So in summary, the number seems to be fine, but hey if their dedicated fraud guy is too dopey to know if yes or no, how can anyone be sure??

This is a scam. I called the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and they confirmed that there is no such number in their organisation. These bastards are con artists trying to steal your financial information and rip you off. Jut hang up the phone and call the ATO to report them. The ATO has its real phone numbers on their official website.

it is wired, the lady call my number by anonymous phone- without caller ID, is the ATO doing things like that? so i believe it is a scam.

This number called me & wanted my bank account details to confirm my identity!! Apparently they couldn't identify me any other way.. yeah right. I said I'm sure they will call me again if the ATO needs me that urgently & the lady just said ok & hung up. Might drag it on a lot longer next time just to annoy them!!!!!

Definitely a scam; just called Australian Taxation Office and they have no record of this number. The lady who called insisted on my personal and company information before she would tell me what the call was regarding. Got very cross when I asked for her particulars so that I could check that she was from the ATO. Number was showing as "number withheld". Worrying part was that she knew who my Accountant was and our Trust name. Started threatening that if they didn't get information and if I didn't call back within two days they would prosecute. Be careful.

Yup, the number is genuine. I did not feel comfortable to talk to the lady when she rang me as she was very rude and sounded like one of the sham calls from overseas. So i rang the ATO myself and sorted things out.

I have been working with the ATO for some time and I can confirm that this is not a scam number.
It is for the Early Intervention Area of the ATO but once again, if in doubt, call the ATO directly on their general line.

But you need to provide your tax agent number...... you have completely different proof of identity protocols that you follow, idiot
