This crowd made a very convincing phone call to my husband regarding a tax review which showed we owed some thousands to the ATO. It is a scam and no, we didn't get caught out, because we kept asking questions. Then we contacted our accountant and the ATO to be sure. Rather distressing in the meantime though.

Called and after I answered with our usual "Welcome to..." blurb, they proceeded to ask if we take credit card payments or just cash and cheque. Believing it to be a genuine client I stated that we did take credit card payments, but not cheques. Then they asked if we took American Express and I replied that we did not, only Visa and Mastercard. I then asked if they could tell me who they were, but they hung up without saying another word. I'm assuming (having now read this page) that they will attempt to call back later and claim to be the ATO or something cracking down on me. Too bad I've now blocked them.

Caller: No name 8:59 call came to my mobile from (02) 6140 3464 answered "Hello, this is Laurie" mid north English bloke mumbled "Is that [name of my business]?" yes "Yeah I'm just double checking, do you accept payment by credit card there, or would it be by cash or cheque?" we can take credit card payment, asked what service he needs muttered "Yeah, ummm, I'm just double checking, just for future reference I know it's not accepted everywhere, but do you accept American Express?" no, was starting to say which we do accept he interrupted and said "You don't.", sounding panicky we only accept Mastercard and Visa he interrupted again, said "Right." I continued, said not American Express or Diners, asked whether need [service we provide] nervously muttered unintelligible words, then said yes, need to work around paying with American Express, will call later, ended call
highly suspicious call how can you "double check" anything you have not already checked? he sounded nervous, panicky, agitated guessing he is a new recruit in a scamming job calling number and others very similar have been reported by many people here as being used to make scam calls wondering whether he has an American Express card which he may legally use, or someone's stolen one, or just found details of one, hoping to do some scammy purchases with those details
9:38 called back with number hidden no ring tone, immediately to recorded greeting, woman's voice, similar English accents, "Hello, you're through to a market Re-search company.", call immediately cut out
no name, just "a market Re-search company" clearly scammers

Caller: A guy with english accent/ and a lady Same number ID called our business 3 times. First time lady. Other times, a guy with english accent. Immediately asked "if we accept american express" or "what credit cards we accept". We gave nothing away and just probed them of what they want. They hang up.(so rude). Seriously, these scammers, go get an honest paying job and do something good in life instead of wasting time and trying to scam other people's well hard earned money.

Caller with English accent from this same number . They asked am I (my full name) and after I confirmed yes, they asked if i take credit card payments Amex. I asked what business is this for and he replied he wasn’t sure but his step dad had left my name and number on a piece of paper and to phone me to ask if I took Amex? As I dont have a business , other than an Airbnb for which payments are all done online, I was suspicious. Found info about this number on this site and have now blocked the number.

I also got a call from Kenneth Matthews to day he was from the ATO and there was a petition against my name and my address was under surveillance . And to ring the same number what I want to know is how can these people get away with this and can or will this be investigated further! I am concerned for others or the elderly that give them their information ?

English guy called from a canberra district number. Wanted to know if we took AMEX and if he had the right Business Name and Address. Very Suspicious when asked where he was calling from he said - "his dad gave him the number and he cant talk English" I informed him we do not accept credit cards for payment and was he a customer? When pressed further he got nervous and tried to end the call - and hung up the phone.. Police should investigate this further, clear criminal activity.

I run a small startup in QLD, a guy with an English accent called demanding to know if we took credit card payments. He called himself David Jones and said that he lived in Queensland. He had some knowledge of my company. He put the phone down, I checked the number its a Canberra number I called it and you get a recorded message with an English female voice saying "we are a market research company" Then the phone goes dead. Usually these types of events area are a prelude a load of scam calls and phishing emails ....Beware !

Does anyone else forward these numbers to the police? reporting spam numbers is just as important as this app identifying spammers between us all

Caller: Call Center Same as AMEX Question. I asked where he was, he said "Oh, it might come up with a Canberra number, but I am actually in <my suburb> said with nooo confidence he had even heard of it before let alone live there. He then made up a Name for his Dad who he was going to Pay "the account" with. Quizzed him more without giving info, he eventually hung up. So strange. But makes sense if they are compiling a list of details for other scammers to buy from them.
