This crowd made a very convincing phone call to my husband regarding a tax review which showed we owed some thousands to the ATO. It is a scam and no, we didn't get caught out, because we kept asking questions. Then we contacted our accountant and the ATO to be sure. Rather distressing in the meantime though. Called and after I answered with our usual "Welcome to..." blurb, they proceeded to ask if we take credit card payments or just cash and cheque. Believing it to be a genuine client I stated that we did take credit card payments, but not cheques. Then they asked if we took American Express and I replied that we did not, only Visa and Mastercard. I then asked if they could tell me who they were, but they hung up without saying another word. I'm assuming (having now read this page) that they will attempt to call back later and claim to be the ATO or something cracking down on me. Too bad I've now blocked them. Caller: No name

mid north English bloke mumbled "Is that [name of my business]?"
"Yeah I'm just double checking, do you accept payment by credit card there, or would it be by cash or cheque?"

muttered "Yeah, ummm, I'm just double checking, just for future reference I know it's not accepted everywhere, but do you accept American Express?"
no, was starting to say which we do accept
he interrupted and said "You don't.", sounding panicky
we only accept Mastercard and Visa
he interrupted again, said "Right."
I continued, said not American Express or Diners, asked whether need [service we provide]
nervously muttered unintelligible words, then said yes, need to work around paying with American Express, will call later, ended call

how can you "double check" anything you have not already checked?
he sounded nervous, panicky, agitated
guessing he is a new recruit in a scamming job
calling number and others very similar have been reported by many people here as being used to make scam calls
wondering whether he has an American Express card which he may legally use, or someone's stolen one, or just found details of one, hoping to do some scammy purchases with those details

no ring tone, immediately to recorded greeting, woman's voice, similar English accents, "Hello, you're through to a market Re-search company.", call immediately cut out

Same number ID called our business 3 times. First time lady. Other times, a guy with english accent. Immediately asked "if we accept american express" or "what credit cards we accept". We gave nothing away and just probed them of what they want. They hang up.(so rude). Seriously, these scammers, go get an honest paying job and do something good in life instead of wasting time and trying to scam other people's well hard earned money.
I also got a call from Kenneth Matthews to day he was from the ATO and there was a petition against my name and my address was under surveillance . And to ring the same number what I want to know is how can these people get away with this and can or will this be investigated further! I am concerned for others or the elderly that give them their information ? Caller: call centre
English guy, no hello. asked were we still at our address. Do we take American express, No, do you take other cards? I answer Yes. He hangs up. No manners these people. Go and get a proper job. Rang no back. Market Research.
All of the above just some scammer number now blocked English sounding guy, asked if we take American Express. When I said no he hung up. Caller: Female with English accent
Same as above - confirmed my company name then asked "if I accepted AMEX". I said "for what?" She the said "oh, my boss was asking" I said "No" then she hung up.
Does anything get done about these scammers? Does some govt body investigate?

Call from a mumbling idiot this morning via (02) 6140 3464.
He asked if this is [business name]. I said yes, as it is our business name.
He then asked if we take Amex. No.
I asked him where he was from (to see if he was a client, although he sounded so dopey that I had very strong doubts. He said England, but he'd just moved to Glenroy [near our location].
He then asked if we take other credit cards. I again said no.
He thanked me, hung up and crawled back under his rock! a**hole!
Caller: Jack - man with an English accent.
just had a phone call from and English man named jack. wanting to make a payment with amex. when i said we dont he seemed agitated.
he said his step dad needed to pay an invoice and that he had left urgently to catch a plane. i asked the name of the company he said G & M. i asked for relating invoice number and he began to tell me he wasn't sure and was a bit confused. started discussing bank details asked if we accepted cheques or cash. all i said was that the details were on the bottom of the invoice for reference. when i asked for the relating invoice number again to reference he said he would go and get it sounded nervous and then came back and repeated the questions. kept saying he couldn't find the invoice he has been asked to pay. just block the number. there should be more penalties for these people.
asked us if we are still at the same location. said yes. said that she wants to use our service. but can't tell the detail. then asked if we accept AMEX. I honestly don't know, I'm not an accountant. she said will call back later. will block her.
Caller: "John - from Sydney" with an Indian accent
Wanted to know if our business was still located at (our old address) - when I asked who was asking he said John. I asked where he was calling from - "Sydney but no company". I replied that we no longer had an office there - his reply was "Ok, I will have to tell my father. He also wants to know if you still accept AMEX as payment?" When I said that we do not take any payments at our office he just said OK and hung up.
Asked about AMEX being accepted or not, I told them yes and inquired why they are asking. He/she said asking about because their boss wanted to know and want to be a customer...definitely spam. Got a call this morning, a man asking if my company was still located on Lonsdale street. I replied that we have relocated but didn't explain further. He then asked if I accept American Express. I thought this was unusual and asked "Who am i speaking with?" He replied " Joe (unintelligible mumble). Do you accept AMEX?" Something just didn't seem right, so i asked him to specify where he worked and what was the reference number on the tax invoice he wished to pay. He "Ummmm'ed" for too long and that confirmed I was speaking to a complete idiot and this was definitely scam. I told him he had called the wrong number and hung up. They called asking if we took Amex so they can make a payment and then tried to confirm our address. I knew it was suss when they mentioned a very old address and I asked for what booking they were making payment for and he then said he doesn't have one. I then asked what service he was interested in and hung up on me. Definitely a scam given the above comments and his reaction. Good try no sale a.hole! Caller: Telemarketer/Scam
We have started using theQ.com.au to front end our business calls and it blocks any callers that have 4+ (configurable) complaints on this site. Saves us having to deal with these low lives because of this awesome community. Thanks to everyone for posting these. :)

Same as the others asked if we were "business name" then asked if we accepted American Express. I asked them where they were calling from and the reason for the call. They said they were a potential customer, Sounded suspicious so I hung up.
They called on a landline number first and when I hung up on them, they then called back on a private number! Terrible.
