This crowd made a very convincing phone call to my husband regarding a tax review which showed we owed some thousands to the ATO. It is a scam and no, we didn't get caught out, because we kept asking questions. Then we contacted our accountant and the ATO to be sure. Rather distressing in the meantime though. - AnonymousOctober 23, 2018Nuisance callAustralia
Called and after I answered with our usual "Welcome to..." blurb, they proceeded to ask if we take credit card payments or just cash and cheque. Believing it to be a genuine client I stated that we did take credit card payments, but not cheques. Then they asked if we took American Express and I replied that we did not, only Visa and Mastercard. I then asked if they could tell me who they were, but they hung up without saying another word. I'm assuming (having now read this page) that they will attempt to call back later and claim to be the ATO or something cracking down on me. Too bad I've now blocked them. - Laurie WilliamsOctober 23, 2018Scam callAustralia
Caller: No name
8:59 call came to my mobile from (02) 6140 3464
answered "Hello, this is Laurie"
mid north English bloke mumbled "Is that [name of my business]?"
yes
"Yeah I'm just double checking, do you accept payment by credit card there, or would it be by cash or cheque?"
we can take credit card payment, asked what service he needs
muttered "Yeah, ummm, I'm just double checking, just for future reference I know it's not accepted everywhere, but do you accept American Express?"
no, was starting to say which we do accept
he interrupted and said "You don't.", sounding panicky
we only accept Mastercard and Visa
he interrupted again, said "Right."
I continued, said not American Express or Diners, asked whether need [service we provide]
nervously muttered unintelligible words, then said yes, need to work around paying with American Express, will call later, ended call
highly suspicious call
how can you "double check" anything you have not already checked?
he sounded nervous, panicky, agitated
guessing he is a new recruit in a scamming job
calling number and others very similar have been reported by many people here as being used to make scam calls
wondering whether he has an American Express card which he may legally use, or someone's stolen one, or just found details of one, hoping to do some scammy purchases with those details
9:38 called back with number hidden
no ring tone, immediately to recorded greeting, woman's voice, similar English accents, "Hello, you're through to a market Re-search company.", call immediately cut out
no name, just "a market Re-search company"

Caller: A guy with english accent/ and a lady
Same number ID called our business 3 times. First time lady. Other times, a guy with english accent. Immediately asked "if we accept american express" or "what credit cards we accept". We gave nothing away and just probed them of what they want. They hang up.(so rude). Seriously, these scammers, go get an honest paying job and do something good in life instead of wasting time and trying to scam other people's well hard earned money. - JasonNovember 16, 2018Scam callAustralia

I also got a call from Kenneth Matthews to day he was from the ATO and there was a petition against my name and my address was under surveillance . And to ring the same number what I want to know is how can these people get away with this and can or will this be investigated further! I am concerned for others or the elderly that give them their information ? - KeithFebruary 15, 2019UnknownAustralia
Caller: a lady with a strong accent
she told me my name and asked me if i accepted American express payments, I said no, I only accept cash or direct deposit, she then said " my husband will contact you later with the technical information..??" (I repair electrical equipment)
after seeing all the comments here it is obviously a scam - AnonymousFebruary 15, 2019UnknownAustralia
just got a call from this number too. We are a charity organisation and he asked if he could make a donation using AMEX. He knew where we were located and said he would come in Monday to donate! - AnonymousFebruary 11, 2019UnknownAustralia
Caller with English accent from this same number . They asked am I (my full name) and after I confirmed yes, they asked if i take credit card payments Amex. I asked what business is this for and he replied he wasn’t sure but his step dad had left my name and number on a piece of paper and to phone me to ask if I took Amex? As I dont have a business , other than an Airbnb for which payments are all done online, I was suspicious. Found info about this number on this site and have now blocked the number. - AnonymousFebruary 6, 2019Unsolicited callAustralia
I just received the same call asking if I took american Express, when I said no, they said how about any other credit card for which I said yes than asked who was call, he said Oh thank you I am just calling for my boss, then hung up. Definate scam call but interesting to know what they are gaining from it. - AnonymousFebruary 6, 2019UnknownAustralia
Caller: An English lady
Same as above. Asked if I accepted amex. knew my name and towm I live. When I asked what she wanted to know for she hung up. - AnonymousFebruary 5, 2019Scam callAustralia
A man from this number called at 1020 today, if this was [the name of our business] and asking whether we accepted American Express cards. I indicated we did not. He then asked if we accepted any other cards. When I asked what he was calling in reference to, he hung up. After reading the reviews on this site, I called the number back and received a message indicating that 'This is a market research company." I have since blocked the number. - JeanetteJanuary 31, 2019Unsolicited callAustralia
Caller: didn't say
Man asked if we took American Express payments, when I said no, asked if I took other cards. I asked him what the purpose of the call was, and he said he was checking on behalf of someone else. No indication of why he was calling really. - AnonymousJanuary 31, 2019UnknownAustralia
Caller: Scammer with Strong Asian Accent
I answered phone: "Good Morning"
Man with strong asian accent asked: "Is your name <full name> ?".
I said: "No ..."
(I was about to say "no-one here by that name", but before I could, and he hung up.
How the hell did he get my full name !
Extremely few places know my full name: banks, ATO, Telstra, Ergon, and that's it.
For every other on-line account I have, I make up and use different names, dates of birth, etc, so there is no way he could have got this information from Facebook, Twitter, etc. - AnonymousJanuary 31, 2019UnknownAustralia
Same as AMEX posts above. He introduced himself way too quickly for me to understand it. When he called he specifically named my husband and asked if he could speak with him. I said he was busy, then got the AMEX question. I was getting a bit suss at this stage and he said thank you for helping him complete his survey. SUPER WEIRD. - AnonymousJanuary 25, 2019UnknownAustralia
Same as above, asked if we took amex I said no then he asked what cards we accepted. I said I'm sorry I don't know what your enquiry is regarding then he hung up. What the? - unknownJanuary 25, 2019UnknownAustralia

Asked if we accept American Express - JoeJanuary 9, 2019UnknownAustralia
Similar to the last two. Wanted to speak to my wife (the business owner). I said she was busy so he seemed happy to talk to me. I couldn't figure out what he was on about, so I got wife to talk as well. We eventually got to the American Express question. When we explained all our business payments are cash or bank transfer, he hung up. - AnonymousDecember 13, 2018Unsolicited callAustralia
English Gent, acknowleged me by my surname said doing RESEARCH & wanted to know if we accepted American Express for our business, I thought was legitimate & advised we are not in business & have not been for many years. Now by checking here realise are scammers.
