Better still, buy a CallGuardian phone and the calls don't even come through. It ask them to identify themselves, which of course they won't, they just hang up

Yep, I had 3 calls 20 min apart from this number on just one night.
I didn't answer as it was an unfamiliar number. I'm also on the Do Not Call register.
Some relief to find other people's complaints here.

It seems this number is back in use by scammers - he started by telling me that they installed lights 2 years ago. I replied the house wasn't even built then to which he replied they weren't trying to install them again??? I repeated the house wasn't built 2 years ago so how could they have done - he hung up. Strong Indian accent.

It appears to be a scam about replacing "spotlights" (household incandescent lights?) with LED bulbs. The caller, whose name was Mark (apparently), told me that it was a free government service and asked know how many lights I had that needed to be replaced. Since "Mark" had an accent I realised he was most likely dodgy, so told them I was not interested and hung up.

A silent number only means the number is not shown in the phone book and cannot be given out by the directory service.. These numbers still exist in the number range. These foreign callers use an automatic calling device that steps through the number range, incrementing the number by one each time hoping that some-one will answer. When the call is answered it is switched to one person in a panel of many people just waiting to flog stuff to you or to scam you. Google 'call operators in India' and you'll see the set up. Many images available.
The Australian rules governing Do Not Call can only apply to Australian companies and scammers where fines can be imposed on scam callers. It is an Australian law only, which is a bit of a nuisance.
My answer to that is not to answer any calls where I don't recognise the phone number, my phone displays the calling number (CLI). Of course, I have friends who have private numbers too, but they all leave messages, it is just these overseas people who don't! Tom P

Just got a call from these cretins. Didn't recognise the number when it rang so let it go through to voicemail. Of course they didn't leave a message!. Then checked this site and voila ! Blocking number now!

Oh no, these cretins are at it again for the new year - three attempted calls, evening, morning and afternoon, in the last two days. I blocked the number months ago, but still they call. Surely there must be action that the telcos can take to put a stop to the insane harassment.
