Got a call today left for the answering machine as we were about to have lunch. Couldn't make out the recorded message, but the digital number was quoted by another system so was clear enough to understand. Didn't call back, just copied the full number into Google & presto, this site. Thanks everyone, keep reporting the trash.

100% SCAM - NOT CENTRELINK - If you get a call from Centrelink you can tell them you will call back - if they are legit they would document that they had called and what it was in relation to and that you have opted to call back. Just go to the main Centrelink page to find a number and call - do not use a number they provide in case it is a scam! Once you get through f it was them - they should direct your call to the department making the outbound call / provide you with the correct number to call.

Caller: Said her name was Michelle. Had an accent & was clearly calling from overseas, despite the appearance of a NSW number. Similar experience to those reported above. 'Michelle' said she was Centrelink & asked how much my last payment was then told me I had been underpaid. Asked for my name & postcode & made an appointment for the following week at my local Centrelink office. I was suspicious after I got off the phone & Googled the number, then found these posts. What I would like to know is 'Why didn't Centrelink send an online message out warning against these scammers?' given that the hoax was brought to their attention by earlier call recipients.

Caller: (02) 8488 1031 A caller didn't leave message so I called back and there was a recorded outgoing message saying 'Thank you for calling the Department of Human Services please hold the line while we connect you to one of our consultants". Soon a voice announced their name - Michelle and asked how they could help, when I spoke they hung up. It must definitely be a scam.

Caller: Allegedly Centrelink Had the same call this morning. Thought it was a scam. Emailed Centrelink then did some research on the phone number (02) 8088 1031 (the number I was asked to call). Have caller ID and saw the original call came from (02) 8488 1031 then read these posts. Have put a warning on FB. Unbelievable but sounded authentic at the time. I think many will be sucked in.
