A person with a strong accent called me at 2:56PM Qld time, advising that they were calling from the ATO and I had an outstanding debt of 1,200.00 and requested a credit card payment. They said all of this before I even gave my name or details. I asked where they were calling from again and they advised they were from the ATO Fraud department. I said I don't think so and they replied "okay bye bye" and hung up. I called back and after 3 rings they answered "ATO how can I help you". There was no hold music or tone it was a direct line I told them that I did not believe this was a legitimate call and that I will be reporting them.

Same here, same (02) 8090 6580 number, heavy accent, pretended being from ATO, couldn't pronounce my name but said that I'm "a primary suspect" !
Blocked that number. The scammers should be reported to Federal police.

Same as all the others, claimed to be calling from ATO in Canberra. When I said that's not true as it was a Sydney number they hung up. I called back and they answered the phone as ATO and I told them it's a serious crime to impersonate a federal agency and that it would be reported. They hung up again.

I called ATO fraud line on 1800 008 540 to report it. You should all do the same (or contact police) otherwise they won't be stopped.

They're obviously scam. I don't understand how they don't get caught when using an Ozi number? Even if it's a VOIP, they should still be paying for that number which seems to be a Sydney are-code !

Most hilarious phonecall I have received in a while, it basically mirrored everyone else's experiences but the anxious voice claiming to be from the ATO cracked me up, praticularly when I said, "I work in the ATO, you are aware we don't conduct our business like this yes?", his response, ".....f*ck!.." *hangs up phone* Hahaha

They called using my first and surname claiming to be from the "Tax Office" with a refund of over $900 for me. It took probably 15 seconds before anyone was there once I answered. Their calling system sucks and it was the first red flag. The heavy (Indian?) accent was the next. He quickly asked for my Visa, Mastercard or DebitCard #. I meant to run him around and waste a bit of his time before chewing him out, but after I gave him a made-up 16 digit number he abruptly said "bye bye Baby!" and hung up. I wonder if he thought he had just made a big score and was going to celebrate with a milk tea. Or maybe he keyed in the number and saw it was invalid. I did get to ask him how the weather was in Canberra. He said it wasn't good. :-) As if he was within 8,000 kilometers of the place!

An obvious scam. Allegedly someone from the ATO wanted to refund me some over-payment and needed my card number. Obviously couldn't tell me my husband name, couldn't tell who was the accountant I submitted my tax return through, couldn't tell why they need a card number when my bank account details are with the ATO. When I asked for to be sent a mail, the person shouted "oh my god" and disconnected the call
