Came home to a message on our answering system... YEP! was the same message other people are commenting about.... John Matthews regarding commonwealth public prosecutions having a law suit filed against my name concerning a financial tax fraud 4 people live in our house...so who's name??? Tried to ring the number back... (02) 6140 3419 no answer rang out.
Was starting to really worry thinking OMG. Then I thought bit suss not having an answering service for a government facility who don't normally ring for thing like this... they send you a bluey. So I looked up his name and number on Google! What a wanker... who gives him the right to invade out thoughts like that. If my elderly mother or any other older person for that matter got this call they would probably just about have a heart attack.

Have had 2 calls from John Matthews both times left a different number. First call was from a female. Never asked for a person by name and there is 2 tax payers in the house. What a scam I hope no one gets caught up in this.

Just received the same ridiculous message from Kenneth Matthews with a return number of (02) 6152 8654. He advised that I had to contact my "attorney" ( probably still thinks he's ringing in the USA) and finished with "Have a nice day." Sounds like ATO have been informed; perhaps they should put something informing people of this scam on their website.

Message left on phone from Kenneth Matthews from the ATO stating I had tax fraud & to ask my attorney to call him, number came up as overseas private & voice was like a recorded message

Same msg from Kenneth Matthews - thought he sounded South African - threatening dire action from the ATO. As we had been away we were concerned at first but then realised the ATO don't act this way & definitely don't refer to a legal representative as an "attorney".

Same here today. Scam call left on my answering machine from John Matthews threatening legal action for fraud and tax evasion. Ended the call with "Have a blessed day" which is simply stupid. Also, no name was given and the "Aussie" accent was poor to say the least. Call was made from a private number and JM asked me to call (02) 6145 2528, as with some of the reports above. I am tempted to 419 scambait these d*cks just for fun.

We had the same aggressive message left on our answering machine as described in other posts from a Kevin Shaw claiming to be from the ATO. So I called the number from my mobile with the Caller ID blocked. A male with an Indian sounding accent (different to the voice in the message which sounded kind of South African) who had the balls to answer the phone "Hello this is the ATO". I advised that I had a message left asking me to call my number. He then asked for my name, and I made one up. He then went off on this crazy tangent telling me "first you called me Jerome, now you're calling me <insert made up name here>, can you stop calling me". I replied "I said <insert name> was my name, I know what you guys are doing, you're full of sh!t and it's all over the internet".
Does anyone know if this is worth reporting to the police? I'm worried some people wouldn't think to check on the internet and may fall for this scam.

Just returned home to find a threatening message on my answering machine telling me I was being investigated for tax fraud and to ring back as soon as possible otherwise I would be in big trouble. Like many of the other comments, the man had a heavy accent and gave his name as John Matthews. His return number was (02) 6145 2528. He also did not have any name but a "you" despite there being two tax payers in the household. Can that number be traced so that these creeps can be stopped?

Our call was from Kenneth Matthews who did not ask who to speak with even though there are two tax payers in the household. Definitely a scam.
