Just received the same phone call with the same amount and asking to ring the same number. Rang the accountant who advised me that it was a scam.

I just got a call to my mobile from "the federal government" wanting to send me a cheque for $7268 for a bank fees refund. Didn't get as far as legal fees before I hung up. This one had only a slight accent which made her sound believable....until she started asking questions, that if the call was authentic, she would already have known the answers.

Just got the call. Same amount $7268. Knew it was a scam so played along. Reclaim dept aust fed government dept, etc. Asked my bank acct as id. Gave him the correct bsb but incorrect rest of it. He said that my acct was wrong. Dont know how he knew this as i kept correct format only changed a few numbers around. He obviously had my bank acct details. He then needed my name to post a cheque to me. He had my address. He asked my first name as i guess he only had an initial so i obliged with an incorrect name of same initial. Gave me a reference number of MO 207 and to call (02) 8006 8345 speak to M Rankin or Max Stevens i think he said if i wanted the money. Oh he also asked for my DOB, i gave him an incorrect one as well. Not sure how this scam works. He never asked for money so is he trying to create fake identity or use the data to try crack passwords using name DOB. He had my bank aact details im sure so that is a worry but cant see how he can do anything with the data he had.

I wasn't paying attention and they got my details too - same amount - gave me a ref #. I now have to ring my bank. When I rang (02) 8006 8345 it was answered by an Indian sounding lady who said they were closing for the day and to call back tomorrow - when I asked Eastern or Western time, she stumbled and said Eastern at 11:00am. I said that's very late and asked where she was from, She said Australian Reclaims Department.

Yep - still doing the rounds. I proved my Identity with a false DOB (hahaha) and requested they send my cheque (smart enough not to opt for an EFT as that would mean divulging my bank details) to my postal address which they already had from my white pages listing. What bank would I like my cheque from? COM, St George, NAB or a couple of others were mentioned. I said anyone will be fine ..just post it out! I can bank it wherever I like - yeah right, I too, am not going to be calling back.

I got that call from the Australian Federal Government reclaim department (all very heavily Indian accented, which is silly of them not to know that the Australian Government only outsources to OS call centres that can pretend to sound Aussie LOL)

I recorded it for a laugh.

We will be in trouble if these scammers grow half a brain, research their story, sound less Indian or Nigerian, but until that happens the cops don't want to know that some people could be stupid enough to give away their money.

(02) 8006 8345 - Just had a call from a thick accent male claiming he was from the aust fed govt. and i was overcharged $7268 in bank fees. wanted my account details and date of birth. knew it was a scam straight away so i played along giving all false details - really just wanted tro waste his tome on the phone thinking he had a live one. Then asked him how he slept at night because we was a con artist and scammer, which he denied and re-stated that he was from the aust fed govt. told him to go f*#k himself and and stoip being a low life human.

Dont get angry, get even. :)

Just like all the other comments here - definately a scam of some sort, wish I had not given my DOB to the caller offering $7268.10 if I rang this number and quoted AS0206 to John Douglas or Keith Rankin

Same deal with the Reclaim Dept at Angel Place Sydney. Same phone number to call with the reference number provided by the first Indian and talk to John Douglas.
Silly me just gave the second Indian my DOB and full name. He knew my address. Asked if I wanted money transferred to my bank account - I said "no" and to mail the cheque for $7268.00.

I have since contacted by bank and given them the above details. They have cancelled all my cards with them and are reissuing. What a damn nuisance!
