FYI I Have just reported this to skype

There is a financial telephone scam in Australia using a Skype (Sydney) number (02) 8006 4252/">(02) 8006 4252.
A typical call is from "Jerry Martin", supposedly of Finance Department of Federal Govt re sending me a cheque for $7,200 for overcharged Bank Fees.

They have a lot of details of DoB, address etc etc already from somewhere.
To get the cheque or direct Bank Transfer you re supposed to call back to Department Manager "Maria Williams". The number (02) 8006 4252 is not a Sydney number it is a Skype Internet number (I believe because it is very similar to one I have) so could go anywhere.
Please can you investigate - see website http://www.reverseaustralia.com/lookup/(02) 8006 4252/
where there is a list of complaints about these calls.

Please advise the outcome of your investigations.

Thanks.

Just got home and was advised by my 76 year old mother that she got a call regarding a refund of over $7000 and to call Maria Williams or D Edward...even my mother knew that this was a scam thank goodness.... 'they must think I am stupid if they believed I was going to call back' unfortunately, not every one in that age group understands that this may not be real.... so sad!

The same happened to me. I immediately phoned my bank to warn them of the situation in case the scammers do something. Did anybody here had consequences after the phone call?

OMG I could have been scammed easily until I came to my senses. Same deal as others on this website. They had my name and address and asked for my date of birth because this person could not speak good English she misinterpreted my dob and when she read it back I said that was right even though it wasn't. She also asked me which bank I bank with and she couldn't get that right either so I lead her on telling her that what she had was right. She gave me the ref no and phone no and asked to call back immediately the manager, Marion Williams or Paul Edward. I didn't ring back because I thought they may be able to hack the phone and use it to their benefit with the bill coming to me. Very Scary.

Same call with supposed refund from Federal Govt for $7000+ received today. Caller ID "overseas private number". The call to this number needed to supposedly confirm with managers Alan Jackson or Maria Edwards. There is a government website called ScamWatch (part of ACCC) - I reported it to them.

Difficult to believe that callers with strong Indian accents with no great knowledge of Australian idiom can pose as authentic government officials. Received a call on this today and given a reference and phone number to call. An Indian fellow by the name of "Alan Jackson" answered but requested to call him back because he was busy with another caller. It is amazing that such a blatant scam is allowed to perpetuate. Needless to say he will not get a return call.

I had a gentleman enter my building where I am the Security Manager, he was told to come to level 2 / 121 Pitt street sydney to collect $7248.00 in over paid tax,
He gave me a phone number (02) 8006 4252) which I rang , I asked the Indian lady who answered the phone Australian Government over payed decision,
I asked her the address I could send this man to and she repeated level 2/121 pitt street sydney , I told her it does not exist , she said how do you know that , I said because I manage that building and we don't have a level 2 , she quickly hung up on my .
I called them back severel times but as soon as they hear my voice they hang up , I hate these dirty scheming pricks , I'm gunna keep calling them and harass them ,

Just had exactly the same call, told them to mail the cheque. Also when she asked me to give her my dob to confirm my identity I gave her a false date which she accepted and said it was now confirmed....i also was instructed to ring back Allen Jackson or Maria Edwards and quote my case # MR160. I did and an Indian sounding man answered and I asked to speak to Allen Jackson and he said he was Allen Jackson I said that he didn't sound like an Allen Jackson he promptly hung up. It was a bit of a lark on a cold Thursday afternoon to string her along. But on a serious note I will be reporting this call to ACORN as suggested in one of the comments above.

Also received call from a female called Enni and to call back to the same supervisors to 'reclaim' $7,268 and if my initial was C, which I stated was my husband's initial. I agree with other comments, why can't something be done to stop this. I notice the same comments on another scamm phone number with complaints dating back 3 yrs. It makes the Fed Govt look bad. Any other company or business would certainly persue the scammers. Make sure any vunerable relatives or aquaintances don't fall foul to them.

I am a police officer and tore them a new one after trying to scam my Mum. After informing "Maria Edwards" that over 100 people have reported her to ACORN, she yelled "Do it!" and hung up.

I even asked what post code she was in and she said 2000 even though it is registered to 2036. Well worth the entertainment.
