From my Answering Machine June 9, 2016, 11:15 am. Female, Indian accent. She gave her name but it was inaudible. She claimed to represent the 'Tax Office', concerning some 'criminal actions' in my tax information. Warned of serious consequences if I didn't call back! Doesn't appear to know my name. I think I will call her back, use the name of Ned Kelly, and see what more I can discover. Her Phone was busy. A shame.

As others have reported, this is definitely a scam.
Woman's voice with a very thick accent with a recorded message that starts before the answering machine has finished, telling me that ".... from the Australian Tax Department and the reason and purpose of my call is to tell you about a legal warrant that will be issued against your name for tax fraud and bad taxes..."
Clear signs of a scam: (a) They claim to be from the "Australian Tax Department" instead of the "Australian Taxation Office" (b) The ATO don't call you to inform you of problems with your taxes, they write you a letter (so that there is a paper trail for legal purposes) (c) Before issuing a warrant against someone for tax fraud, the ATO is required to write to them to ask them to clarify information so that they have the necessary evidence of intent to commit a fraud or tax evasion that would be required in court to justify the issuing of a warrant. In general, this letter would also indicate which item(s) on your tax return(s) require clarification rather than stating some grand total figure (d) The ATO would also confirm your identity with you before discussing any case details, as such they would not simply give out these details on a voicemail or to whomever answered the phone (e) If the ATO were really issuing a warrant against someone, they would also know the full name and address of the person they are getting the warrant for. As such, they wouldn't say that the warrant would be issued against "your name" they would state the person's full name and address against whom the warrant is to be issued (f) If the ATO were really in a position to seek a warrant, they would not insist that you call them back on a Sydney number to sort things out, they would simply get the warrant. The ATO are not able to "do a deal" to get rid of "legal issues", they must apply the legislation as written. It is up to the courts to determine if any deal is done. Equally, the ATO does not have the statutory authority to garnish your wages, seize your assets or sell your home without your consent or a court order and such a court order cannot be issued without you being given the right to present argument(s) in your defence (g) IF, and that is a big IF, the ATO do really want to talk to you via phone, they would call the number you listed on your last tax return, not call you on some other random number (as they did in my case).
and finally
(h) UNLESS you have knowingly committed a fraud or attempt tax evasion, there is no reason for the ATO to be contacting you in the first place. So unless you're trying to get away with something illegal, you are in no danger of having the ATO trying to get a warrant issued against you, so tell these clowns that "YOU KNOW IT IS A SCAM AND SO DO THEY" and remind them that under the Australian Criminal Code (s.474.17) it is an offence to "use a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence" (https://www.cdpp.gov.au/crimes-we-prosecute/cybercrime)

Yes, same as everyone else here. Message from lady with strong Indian accent. The ATO would never call you. They would send letters and reminders to you if you have any tax issue.
Don't be alarmed and panic. Stay calm and delete the message.

Had the same message as above, they are ringing from overseas and request that you ring this Sydney number. I spoke to them and said they cannot be the ATO because they are ringing from overseas, I told them to send me a letter. He seemed shocked that I didn't believe him, so I hung up.

I just had the same phone call. I googled to see if the number she gave me was a registered business number but nothing came up. Must be a scam... Thought the ATO don't call direct, any fraud or criminal actions are sent via mail.

My mum got a call from this number on Friday 10/6 saying she owes money to the tax office and if it was not paid Tuesday 14/6 she would be arrested and have all her assets seized. She called the number today to see if she could make a payment arrangement, Once she told them she had no money they said that it is resolved and deleted. Luckily I was there and used and found this site to stop her giving any information as she has a brain injury. once she hung up I told her to call the police and she was advised to call scam watch and they had to reassure her that it is a scam
