They rang me asking me for my name and date of birth to identify me for some sort of money I own...I know very well I don't owe to anyone thus I refused. They did not identify themselves, so I think they are scammers. WATCH OUT

This is a debt recovery agency used by the federal government to recover debt. See these links: http://www.recoveriescorp.com.au/ and http://www.health.qld.gov.au/qhpp/docs/DHS-factsheet.pdf . I'd suggest ringing the Department of Human Services Debt Recovery Team on 136-330 or if you haven't done your tax get your tax agent to sort it out.

From my experience working in legal offices, have done admin. work at ACCC, have worked in various offices and government departments, I have heard of many scams, I have been a victim of people trying to scam me with all sorts of cons, to which I was aware they were cons, recoveries corp appear to be a legitimate place, but after my son received a scam letter, and confirming the fake phone numbers and Box no. to send money to in Parramatta, I think I know what has happened. There are people who try to steal your identity and they find out ways to make you think you owe money, whether you do or not, or have had past debts or whatever, they find the information, and say they are working on behalf of a particular organisation, and get you to send the money to bogus places, which are nothing to do with recoveries corp. This is my opinion, and it seems like the only explanation from the comments I have read. If anybody gets any of these letters, check with the organisation, and see if it is genuine, and DO NOT SEND MONEY TO BOGUS PLACES.

Centrelink is part of the Department of Human Services.

https://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/owing-money

Recoveries Corp is listed on their website as an external collections agency. If you think Recoveries Corp is a scam, call Centrelink to confirm.

I wasnt willing to give my details to the guy that called me, although I don't think there is any reason to be rude just because the people have an accept! I asked if I could call them back?

I simply goggled the number (read this site) and then went to the recoveries website and dialed their Australian number, spoke to an Australia accented receptionist (if that makes you feel better) and then made my payment to the recoveries corp, which I did legitimately owe.
Just do your research peeps and you'll see that although it seems dodgy, if you do some digging you'll see it is real and that Centrelink are outsourcing their call centres, like may Australian companies do.

Just had a call from these scammers as well. They had an old address for me and I advised that if they really were from the Dept of Human Resources then they would have my correct address as I have definitely changed it with them and I refused to give it to him. He was adamant he was from the dept though and advised he would send through a text with 'more information'. The text had
'Please call AJAY on 1300 557 820 and quote this ref number'
More information, yeah ok.

I googled the number which led me here.
Be careful people!

Yep I got a call from these people also. The number they used for Recoveriescorp was 1300 135 017. Nothing like the actual phone number of their office in Melbourne. (www.recoveriescorp.com.au- 1300 663 060 ) They also said that I could call back on the 1300 557 820. This is a well orchestrated Scam, as they had a number of details of mine that have obviously been sold on the market. Slippery people, a well spoken woman with a slight Indian accent. This won't be helping to create good race relationships. Thanks for all the details they almost had me going.

Had a call from Chami 1300 557 820 wanting to confirm my details on behalf of the Department of Human services. When my wife answered the phone there was that time lapse/gap before Chami spoke so she felt suspicious straight away and he only asked for 'John". He wanted all my details but I just got his - name and phone number and we googled it and can see that it is a scam.

Also thought this was a scam, however they also collect money for unpaid road tolls which in fact I definitely owed! So do ur research as they don’t only deal with Centrelink!

I find that hard to believe Centrelink deduct outstanding government debt directly from government allowance piecemeal over a length of time. They don’t call you! Or tell you! Or get a collections agency after you! Governments are very patient, as soon as you have a windfall the government will deduct its share and outstanding debt, same as student loans, as soon as you earn over a certain amount the government takes its percentage. If you never earn any money or have a windfall in your lifetime then the debt is written off & rebalanced through “Other means”

Keep receiving phone messages saying ring 1300 557 820 with a reference number for an urgent matter, but do not disclose the business name or provide a contact name. I also received an SMS saying this is a message from recoveries call for me regarding an important matter and asking to click on an https: The thing is I don't owe anyone any money. I do not have a DHS account or myGov account and am not in receipt of any benefits also no tax issues. So me thinks it is a scam.......

Never give out your name, address, DOB, account numbers or any details on the phone UNLESS the person asking can legitimately AUTHENTICATE themselves with you!
Anyone could be calling and saying they are Telstra or ATO or any other company or entity that does use 3rd parties to chase outstanding debts.
But how do you know that the caller is really who they say they are or representing??
YOU DON'T..........
Also just because a few people say that they are legit or whatever on this forum - don't buy it - it can just as easily be the scammers trying to bolster their story.
I get these calls from this number all the time on behalf of my clients and they are unable to authenticate themselves or the reason or purpose for the calls.

Watch out as there are fake scams going around using the recoveries corp logo.
The genuine recoveries corps number is 1300 663 060 and the genuine post box is 13159
If in doubt ring the company directly, do not use texted phone numbers or letters that do not match the companies phone number or postal address.

My son received a letter from RecoveriesCorp saying he owed over $4,000 on a credit card which he does not have, he went to bank and confirmed untrue. They wanted him to send the money to GPO Box 9823 in Parramatta, and I confirmed that their Sydney Box no. is in Darlinghurst and I rang 1300 663 060, genuine number, and they said they do not have this box number. I kept ringing a number on the letter 1300 263 245 a recorded message day and night asking you to leave a message and very hard to do, they never answer the phone. I can detect a scam as I have worked in many government departments, including social security and consumer protection, always check everything. I have reported this to Scamwatch.

My son got a letter from this place saying he owed money on a credit card to Commonwealth Bank, which he does not owe, he banks with them, but does not owe on a credit card, and he pays his bills on time, and said he owes over $4,000, he is a good reliable worker, and has been in his job nearly ten years. He does not even have a credit card with them. There is a number to ring 1300 263 245 but it goes all the time with a message to leave, as they are busy at all hours day or night, and you cant even leave a message, they wanted him to send the money to a post office box in Parramatta and the Sydney office box no. is in Darlinghurst which is a long way from there. He went to the bank and they confirmed he did not owe the money, I have complained to Scamwatch and pursuing this further.
