Caller: Apparently it's AGL They called me said they were recording the conversation for quality and blah blah and then they asked me to confirm my date of birth for security verification. What the? If you're calling me on MY mobile from the number you have on your system then it is HIGHLY likely that it's going to be me picking up the phone, innit? Why ask for my personal details??

Caller: AGL Can confirm it is AGL. They left a message asking me to call back and left AGL's legitimate customer contact number for me to call back on.

Caller: Scam AGL shouldn't immediately hang up, shouldn't ask you to verify details without a prior relationship for the product. If this is AGL they may be in breach of the law but I would bet this is a scam.

This has to be a scam. For the range of "so called" companies reported on this number, this is a pretty dumb approach. The calling number you see can be one of several things. 1. An scam operative within the company who found a way to place out-bound calls; 2.An international scammer with fake caller ID masquerading as a known local number for the company. DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS. BLOCK NUMBER.

To clarify - companies ask for identification details when they call you so they can ensure they have contacted the right person, this avoids them providing your information to someone who shouldn't be getting it. If you're unsure who is calling you, just hang up and call the company back and do all dealings through those means, that way you can be sure its the right company.

Just note scammers can spoof numbers (meaning they disguise the number they're calling from with a legitimate number). It is likely a scammer pretending to be AGL to obtain your personal information. I have had scammers using my number to spoof other callers because strangers called me to say they were returning my call when I never called them at all.

Caller: AGL I know everyone is saying that it's a scammer, but I am quite confident that this is actually AGL. Although regardless of who it is... I would never recommend giving out your details over the phone to someone that has called you. Ask what it's regarding, then call back the companies official number.

That's hugely funny, me too, I always challenge these ligit companies who call and ask that question for personal details, and offer to them that in the current scamming global environment, they really need to change their operating model. Otherwise I ask for a personal contact number of theirs so I can call them back.

Caller: Dunno I have two AGL accounts. AGL is all but impossible to contact. They have no interest in resolving problems. So... would AGL contact ME by 'phone? No way Jose'. Scam. I had missed the call, checked # online. Verdict. Scam.

Caller: AGL Number is definitely AGL. They offered me a deal to bundle my nbn and give me credit. I said I’d call them back. I called back AGL directly to let them know I wasn’t interested as nbn is under my roommates name and AGL is under mine. They were completely understanding

Caller: "AGL NBN and Internet" Called during dinner (again) claiming they were following up on a request (we didn't) and would not take no not interested for an answer. I must have said sorry we are not interested at least half a dozen times, in the end I just hung up and blocked the number.

I had the same issue with getting random calls from people saying they were returning my missed call. Some scammer was also spoofing my number (i.e. disguising their number with mine) to try to dig others for information.

Be careful about calls which ask for your personal details. It could be a scammer "spoofing" the number, meaning they are disguising their real number with someone else's number. I know this because some scammer was using my personal mobile number and I kept getting random calls from people who rang and asked me why I had called them when I hadn't! No one should be asking for your personal details over the phone if they ring you - they could be fishing for your details! If you ring a company directly and they ask for your personal details, then that makes more sense as they need to confirm who you are.

Caller: AGL I answered after ignoring 4 or 5 calls over 2 days. It was AGL, they didn't ask for any personal details (they just confirmed they were speaking with my first name) and were calling about being unable to access my gas meter for a reading. So for me this was not spam / scam and was actually AGL
