Received a call today 5 October 2011 by an Indian sounding man telling me the same as above. I had to ring the following number (02) 6100 4079 and quote A786 claiming my $7000 grant. He would then ring back in a few minutes to confirm that I had received the money. I told him not to bother ringing back as I wasn't going to phone the ATO to confirm. He hung up!! I wasn't surprised to see the various websites exposing this scam!

I received a call today from the same bastards, they presented themselves as 'Peter' and 'Daniel Watson'. Alarm bells went off in my head because no Indian has a name like that but I decided to play along with their little game and I said my name was Angelina Jolie. When the Indian on the other line heard, she was like 'Give me a few seconds while I check if you are eligible for the $7000 grant' and then she came to the phone 2 seconds later and said 'Yes, dear, you have won a once in a lifetime $7000 grant, it is a one off payment, you are a very lucky'. Obviously, by this time, I was having trouble keeping it together, the hilarity of the situation was getting to me but I kept on and I feigned surprise and said I'd prefer to give my six digit social security number to the manager of the "Bandigo" Bank (that's how she pronounced it, lol) and acted as though I'd never heard of UNICEF. She proceeded to give me a little bit of an explanation about UNICEF but by this time my rage got the better of em and I went off on a rant about how much of a motherf*cker she was and I called her a scamming Indian bitch a few times. My advice is, don't get angry, get even. Play with their little Indian minds.

Had a very similar call 18 April 2011 advising me that I was lucky to receive $7000 from the ATO because I had paid taxes and had no criminal record.  Had to call (03) 9017 1801 and quote a reference number of A7777 to get the cash.  We had also received a similar call two weeks ago.

I just got a call - they are in Melbourne now.  The number they want you to call back is (03) 9016 8968.  The lady i spoke to said she was working in Melbourne at 2 Lonsdale Street.  i played along with the story and pretended to be interested.  It turns out the $250 payment to unicef has to be paid directly to the "sponsored child" in Delhi in India (via Western Union).  When i queried why it wasn't being paid direct to Unicef she told me that this was the way to get the money directly to the child and that way the child would benefit most.  I must say she wasn't very convincing and the language used wasn't the way we speak here.  So the script clearly had been written by someone in India.  Anyway once i paid the money i was to call back with the receipt number and they would then give a special number to take to a bank (participating banks are Commonwealth, ANZ and NAB - trying to build credibility) and the bank would then issue me with the $7000. Clearly people are still falling for this or else they would be doing it.   You'd only need to go to one of the banks to check.I rang Unicef and they told me that the ACCC are investigating it.  PS  i ended up telling the lady on the phone that she is cheating people and it was very bad and she hung up on me.

I just recived the same call  from someone supposedly from the ATO Melbourne offering me $7,000 for free.

As my dad used to say, Nothing is free in this world!  So as soon as "John" (his made up name) started  to tell me that I can get $7000 from the ATO, in his indian accent I knew it was a scam!

So I replied that if its free, please put the chq in the post to me at the address on the ATO records. He then proceeded to tell me that I need to talk to his supervisor and started giving me the Melbourne ATO telephone number. As he was saying the number, I was typing it into google whilst he was on the line and up popped this website.

So I definitly knew it was a scam, so continued to play along with him and I think he got the impression that I had been sucked in and would call his supervisor!

What a loser! Dont get taken in by these con artists!

I just got call from Indian sounding woman offering $7000 from ATO if I paid $250 to Unicef first.  The government giving away free money sounded dodgy even before they asked for money.  They had my address details.  When I said I wanted to check it out they wanted me to call (02) 6100 4079.
