Received a call today 5 October 2011 by an Indian sounding man telling me the same as above. I had to ring the following number (02) 6100 4079 and quote A786 claiming my $7000 grant. He would then ring back in a few minutes to confirm that I had received the money. I told him not to bother ringing back as I wasn't going to phone the ATO to confirm. He hung up!! I wasn't surprised to see the various websites exposing this scam!

I received a call today from the same bastards, they presented themselves as 'Peter' and 'Daniel Watson'. Alarm bells went off in my head because no Indian has a name like that but I decided to play along with their little game and I said my name was Angelina Jolie. When the Indian on the other line heard, she was like 'Give me a few seconds while I check if you are eligible for the $7000 grant' and then she came to the phone 2 seconds later and said 'Yes, dear, you have won a once in a lifetime $7000 grant, it is a one off payment, you are a very lucky'. Obviously, by this time, I was having trouble keeping it together, the hilarity of the situation was getting to me but I kept on and I feigned surprise and said I'd prefer to give my six digit social security number to the manager of the "Bandigo" Bank (that's how she pronounced it, lol) and acted as though I'd never heard of UNICEF. She proceeded to give me a little bit of an explanation about UNICEF but by this time my rage got the better of em and I went off on a rant about how much of a motherf*cker she was and I called her a scamming Indian bitch a few times. My advice is, don't get angry, get even. Play with their little Indian minds.

mystery gal

I got a call offering me $7000, all I had to do was call this number with a code and give my full name. They 'knew' I had not had any problems with the Tax Department in the last 3 months and a few other details but I couldn't make out much of what he was saying as he had a strong Indian-type accent. He was purportedly from Sydney. I was to call the number straight back, certainly within 5 minutes. I asked him how I could be sure it wasn't some kind of scam, and he said to call the number and talk to the person on the other end, we all know how that fills us with confidence. I have not called the number but thought I'd do a search for some details on it or similar numbers. i don't know if it is a scam but when someone wants to just give you $7000 because your name and number were chosen 'at random' from good tax payers, you have to wonder.I googled it and reached here..

Abhu

Someone called my wife saying the same thing that we will be receiving $7000 from ATO. I googled the number and landed on this site. Be careful from these people. It is a kind of identity theft.

I got the similar call, I am surprised that we are getting this mess every day and reporting to the police but no one is actually taking action against them.

I've just had that call, and went immediately online to check for scams.  I was pretty sure it wasn't legit, because the ATO knows how to give me money if they want to, they have my bank account and also my mailing address, so didn't see any reason to give them a call within the prescribed 5 minutes either.  Very irritating - hope they don't catch too many people out.
