I agree, if they are legitimate with their so-called social research, then why don't they leave a message? I do get tired of trying to get to the phone to answer it, only to find that they've hung up when they get my answering machine. Go away! It's not rocket science, if you are legitimately trying to get answers to questions for social research, at least leave your details so that you APPEAR honest!

Reply to NOT A SCAM and RESEARCH.
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THIS RESEARCH sh*t!
If I choose not to answer after say 5 times, I should automatically be removed from the dialling list.
If these researchers want to get information from people, they should get it from a wide chunk of the population, not just me! How the hell can surveys be accurate if they ask the same people all the time?
I say this because I get between 1 and six so called surveys, telemarketers and charities attempting to ring me every day between 9.00am and 8.00pm, all with different numbers. It's got to the point where I do not know which is which / who is who.
My numbers (landline and mobile) seem to have appeared on a dailling list that has been distributed or sold to every calling centre in the world! I get scammers and call centres calling from overseas as well as this country - some come through with only 5 numbers, some with 10 or more displayed.
Due to all this sh*t, I have a call blocker app on my mobile and divert home phone to mobile. The blocker app logs the number, but phone doesn't ring if it is in blocker settings. Numbers withheld don't ring either, they go straight to voicemail.
I say "if it's not important enough to leave a message, it was never important enough to call me in the first place".
I've got better things to do than answer calls of this nature.
Automatic diallers / computer random generated equipment should be banned or at least, have some sort of mechanism built in that will automatically delete a number out of the system, if it is not answered after so many attempts.

Numerous calls and when I finally answered I was asked what State I lived in and if I was in the age bracket of ? to 55. I was then told that the survey only applied to to smokers,so why wasn't that the first question asked?

This number rang my mobile and asked to do a survey on smoking, which I declined and they just hung up in my ear, before I could finish telling them to bug off.

These people call every day, usually in the evening. For all of those people who are saying we should all just suck it up and answer....I am disabled, and it is painful for me to stand to answer the phone! And why should I when I pay for a phone connection for FAMILY to call me? And I'm on the do not call register? They call so late that sometimes I'm in bed!

If they expect a response they should leave a message. There are so many scams going around it is difficult to differentiate between a 'bad' caller and a 'legitimate' one.

Can confirm it's from Stepping Stones, a six monthly survey group who are are employed to do surveys on behalf of Centrelink for people on social security benefits (but not including the pensions). They ask questions like if you have ever gotten late fees on bills such as phone/gas/electricity, if you've ever had to go without food due to not having enough money, etc.

They are harmless enough but when you ask to be taken off their register (as I'm now on a disability pension) they get quite irate and make a fuss about how you need to stay part of it because the feedback is 'important'. I've asked to be removed three times now, but they refuse to so I have stopped answering the calls.

They've been known to call me as late as 9-9.30pm of a weeknight as well. Luckily it's on my mobile so I can block it in future.

Hope this helps.

I live remote and phone reception is poor at the best of times so rely on messages to return calls. Callers that leave no message are painful and waste a lot of my time

I'm a shift worker on irregular hours. I leave the phone on in case of emergencies with my children or elderly mother. I don't appreciate being woken up for useless surveys and no organisation should be exempt from the DNC register.

I missed a call and looked them up to find this. I'd actually got a letter (a proper one from part of the government i'd expect this from for a proper reason) to say I might be in a survey and to expect a call and this was within the time of day they said they'd call.
I just wished they'd left a message. That would have meant I'd not have assumed spam
