02 9566 6000 Google Maps Scam

I just got a call from this number too. He wanted to confirm my business street address. Said he was from Google maps. Indian guy who sounded like a telemarketer. To my knowledge Google does not call to verify listings. Especially listings that are already verified (as in, they can't go live on Google Maps without being verified). But I'm like, yeah, sure, that's the address. He then asked is that somewhere people can actually walk in (off the street). I said, yes, of course. It's our business address. Originally though he said I was in Miller Street North Sydney and wanted to confirm that address though, and I'm like, 'We've never been in Miller Street North Sydney? So yeah, sounded like a scam.

But what gets me is, WHAT IS THE SCAM? Some Indian scammer calls to confirm the physical address of your business. Okay, but what is in it for them? Are they launching an online directory (like yellow pages or whatever), and are just verifying data? And if not that, what's in it for them to confirm a business address? It's not as if they can break into the office block to rob your office or anything, so...

Basically it sounds like a scam. But what the scam is I've no idea. Thoughts anyone?

Been getting these calls - very suss so looked it up: Apparently the "Google Maps" scam works like this:

NO! Google does not call you to confirm your Google Places (Maps) listing. The scam works like this: Someone calls and states they are updating or confirming your Google maps listing. The client (or in this case potential victim) is asked to press 1 or stay on the line. You are then greeted by an individual who is usually calling from an overseas call center, who asks to verify or confirm your Google maps, or Google business listing.

The Google Maps scam works like this: the pitch is your Google maps listing is not “confirmed” and will soon be removed from Google if it is not confirmed immediately. Of course you are also told it will cost between $200 to $300 to perform this arduous task that takes all of 3 to 4 minutes to complete and Google provides free of charge!

They have been calling me twice a day for about 10 days and don't leave a message. Not sure what its about if you call them back its apparently google.... there are options to speak to various operators but without knowing why they called in the first place its not possible for me to follow it up!

Just got one of these calls from 02 9566 600 myself. A Google-Map dude from India asking to help with my address, sounding rather fishy. Told him – if necessary, l can update my address online and that was the end of this.

Caller: I don't know

From reading other's messages, I can say that I was on Messenger today to a friend. I allowed my location out for 60 minutes to show my friend where I was. Coincidentally, I get this phone call on my Landline. I don't know the number and let it go to my answering machine. Funny how Google maps were invoked on what was, I thought a SECURE messenger service, only to have a phishing expedition, knowing my landline number. Not funny. BLOCKED on my landline and WILL be on my mobile. If it IS Google, Pay your taxes in Australia you bastards!

Hi,
My guess is its a foot in the door to dig deeper into your business info & assess your security etc, as well as assess its wort for your company id info, failing that yes they could be looking for the right business to break into, because you may be in a nay office bock, others have softer security options including homes businesses etc, my advise is tread very carefully with a call like that one

Hi all,

I would say this is Google as I got the call, they rattled of the changed address to me and then google map was updated. Unless they are hacking the google system then I would say they are genuine.
