Claimed to be Centrelink debt department but on call to Centrelink it's most likely not them.

Don't make the same mistake I did!

Female caller rang from unregistered mobile phone number claiming to be from Centrel8nk Debt Collection department Left a message to ring back within 24 hours on this 1800 number. I rang back, and person who answered the phone asked me too many personal questions to "verify " who I was . I advised that I was simply returning their call, so they should know these details, and how did I know that they were not a scam - she told me to "trust " them Subsequently checked Services Australia website and this phone number is not listed. Beware , I believe that this is a scam!

This number is a legitimate number from Services Australia. If you receive a call from this number, I suggest answering the questions to establish Proof of ownership of record or calling the number back as directed. The intention of debt collection is to engage with customers to try to setup a repayment of their debts. Customers are within their rights to appeal the debt if they don't agree with it or enter in a repayment arrangement that works within their financial capacity. Ignoring these calls could lead to further recovery action which can include: the garnishing of bank accounts, tax returns or wages. They could also place a Departure Prohibition order or apply interest charge on the outstanding debt/s
