A passive and sophisticated scam, received a letter that appears to be legitimate ATO with my TFN included. And why I say it is a passive scam is that it would require me to make the next move and did not give me any impetus to be immediately concerned. Called this 1800 number perplexed more than anything as to how I could have an "on-hold tax debt". After inputting my TFN and DOB to the automated answer, waited only a very short time (first give away) and was asked again for DOB and address, then asked for Super fund. Got suspicious and asked why a myGov notification had not also been sent. Hung up. Logged into myGov and found the ATO site down. Days later logged onto ATO site under For Action: Lodgements are up to date Payments are up to date. It could be this is just a malicious scam and the payment options for the ATO offered on the letter were legit, but the debt was not.

I contacted ATO Scam Report number on 1800 008 540 and reported it. After checking my files they confirmed they were not contacting me and lodged a scam report against this number.

Guys - as of today 9th May 2018 - I just called myself the ATO on 13 28 61 and they verified that the number 1800 305 499 is legitimate. You're safe !

Claims to be from the Tax office. Calling at 8pm, wanting confirmation of identity and financial details. Saying I must call back by COB Wednesday (in 48 Hours. I am very suspicious.

Actually its legit this 1800 305 499, a rang the ATO normal number to confirm letter contents, and they said your letter is real, they were following up a debt of $102 from 15 years ago. Someone commented about its a scam because they wanted Super details,, they asked me that on the phone part of there security check, just fund, not account numbers. and remember i rang the normal ATO landline number to do this checking.

Here is the thing the number may be legit most times, but that does not mean it cannot be diverted or intercepted. The letter looked legit and contained my TFN. When I called them about a "on-hold tax debt" the ATO site was down and the letter was the only point of contact when an additional myGov message via the ATO would have been more convincing to me. I hung up after they wanted my super details. I do not conduct any transactions with my super that would concern the ATO. No deposits, no withdrawals.

Looks like a scam re 1800 305 499. This number isn't listed on the ATO website as a contact number and though the voice message is convincing, I can't understand why they wouldn't use a listed ATO number if it was legitimate.

i was told to ring trevour at the ato and when i rang back it was a indian and he wanted my abn i said i have my acn no he said have to have abn then wanted my details then asked 6 questions one contradicted a earlier question and i said how do i know this isnt a scam ?he said i can google the no ?i said you dont know why trevour rang me get him to ring me back and hung up on him scammers everywhere these days
