Multiple calls. Hang up on answer. Possibly automated. Likely a scam!

I received a call from (07) 5539 7896 from someone with a foreign accent. They stated that there had been problems with Telstra's internet and would I please get in front of my computer and turn it on so that the caller could lead me through a series of steps.
This did not seem legit and I told the caller so. He tried to assure me that it was. I said provide me with some piece of information that I was able to confirm that he was who he said he was. He tried to give me an ID number. I said No, give me a telephone number I can call you back on. Five times he gave me 1800 356 92 which is missing the last digit. Finally he gave me the last digit, an 8. I looked this 1800 number up on the internet and found comments from other people stating that it was the number for a marketing company.
I hung up and dialled 1800 356 928 and the number rang out without answer.

Scam, Scam , Scam.....Caller claims to be from Telstra advising that there have been several attacks on my home internet detected in past few days. Intention is to get details of acct. Caller was also quite aggressive and hung up when I challenged them. Call was from overseas, most likely India.
