Appears to be a call centre robot scanning for humans answering. When you answer, they hang up.

The guy with an Indian accent said they were from Telstra and my internet connection was going to be disconnected in a month. He asked me to turn on my computer. I hung up. He immediately called back 3 times. I didn't answer. 30 minutes later he called again saying he was John from Telstra. I put the phone up to the screamer alarm at my front door. Hope the s***head is deaf now.

Please Telstra advise me on how to block stop these annoying calls from
my home phone. These annoying numbers are (07) 4861 2387, (02) 5616 0105 and (03) 8751 7054. They are pretending they are the Australian Taxation Office - debit collectors.

Received a few of these calls in the past so this time instead of hanging up, I played along. I acted like I was extremely worried about my computer. After a few minutes on the line chatting, I held my panic alarm to my phone and let it "ring" for about 10 seconds. All I heard, after that was the woman screaming on the line. #fightback

I was rung morning and evening by 4861 2387 (I'm in Brisbane so possibly an (07) in front of that). The first time I gave them no time to speak, just said I don't accept any unsolicited calls. The second time I decided to listen and was told my computer was to be cut off and that I was to get in front of it and they would talk me through what to do tp prevent this happening. The man who rang had an Indian accent and was posing as a Telstra technician on both occasions. He mentioned knowing my name, so I asked him what it was, and he did in fact have that correct.

I reported this to Telstra and got a very helpful reply. I've copied this below as, by sharing this, it may help many now and in the future:

Reply from Telstra to my report of calls from this number:
Thanks for letting us know about this. What you encountered was, in fact, a scam. These sorts of frauds have been around for quite a while, often impersonating major brands such as Microsoft, Telstra and others. The goal of the fraudsters is to try to gain access to your computer, to your passwords, and sometimes to your bank accounts and other financial information.

Telstra should never unexpectedly contact you and ask for this sort of information and access - we've also recently published an article which contains a few tips as to how you can better identify if a call is truly Telstra, or a potential fraudster.

http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2014/10/15/is-it-really-telstra-calling/

We have additional information available at:

https://www.telstra.com.au/help/contact-us/complaints/verify

If you are ever in doubt about the authenticity of a call, we advise you to simply hang up and contact us through other channels, such as the phone number printed on your Telstra bill, or via MyAccount or even through web forms such as the one you used to reach out to us on for this issue.

If for any reason you’ve provided any information, or access, these fraudsters, please do let us know so that we may offer you some additional advice.

Additional general information over this sort of scam can be found at the ACCC's ScamWatch website:

https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/types-of-scams/buying-or-selling/remote-access-scams

There are a variety of technologies available to help you block the sorts of calls you received. Telstra has a product known as the Call Guardian which provides this sort of functionality as well. These devices work by allowing you to control which phone numbers are able to ring you, reach your voicemail, and so on. If this sort of product is of interest to you, you can find out more about it on our website.

Thanks for the report and we appreciate your vigilance!

I'm in Brisbane, & I've received two calls supposedly from this number in the last three days. As usual, when my answering machine picks up the call, the caller hangs up within a few seconds. From what I've read here, it's yet another scam targeting unsuspecting trusting Australians. Wish they were local .....
