I too have received a number of calls from (03) 9938 2698. When I answer the call is disconnected from the caller's end. I know that the call comes from "The Age" to "inform you about their products." Calls such as these are nuisance calls and actually are illegal if you are on the "do not call" register. I will lodge a complaint.

Continual calls from this number to my landline. Never leaves a message. If it is a business such as Fairfax, very unprofessional. I am on the 'do not call' register. Obviously makes no difference. Absolute nuisance.

I have recently had missed calls from this number and I find it interesting that I am also getting lots of spam emails to my personal email. I do not give out my email or numbers to many places so all I can think is that my details have been provided on a marketing list by a charity iI support or via my subscription to SMH. One of the emails I received was from a third party marketing company called people logic now called Swift digital who coordinate email as well as SMS campaigns. Coincidence?

HIM: "Hi is that <My first name> <My last name>?"
ME: "Yes it is"
HIM "Sorry, wrong number."
He then hung up on me without anything else to say.

I got the caller id and called. It was to (03) 9938 2698 and when I tried that number it was a number for ordering "The Age" newspaper in Melbourne. I tried a 136666 or similar number mentioned in the message and then I got through to a human. I asked that human what the number was and to find if they had called me. She said it'd be hard to track but I insisted so she went off to find out and called me back. Her information found it as someone from the 'cold call' team had called me (she named him because I asked) and his manager (I didn't ask his name but should've I guess) could not get a reason from the cold-caller for why he called me asked by name and then hung up or why he didn't allow me to respond, provide explanation or call me back. The helpful woman suggested there might be a number of reasons but we might not be able to find out unless the guy that made the call explained - which he didn't. I thanked her for finding out but we'll never know I guess and I remain uncomfortable. i am currently involved in some opposition to a development and they have media influence so this might be one avenue of contacting me to confirm the number is mine. I regard the cold-callers call to me as suspicious. I have never subscribed to this publication or any for that matter that would inspire this call - a first for me actually. Asking my name and THEN ALSO on the other hand stating it a wrong number is VERY unnerving. That hasn't happened to anyone I know and have asked so it's not just me that sees it as highly strange if not outright unprofessional and rude if it is The Age. They delisted my number in their database voluntarily after I reported this. I think cold callers need to declare how their employer obtained the personal details and where from to remove personal license for individual cold callers.

This is definitely a call centre for Fairfax Newspapers. I know because, the first time they called, I answered and had to resist fairly determined pressure to sign up for a subscription to the SMH. They had a lot of personal data about me and didn't have an adequate explanation about how they came by it.

Since then, they have rung on four or five different days, usually 3 or 4 calls a day. And, yes, they don't leave messages. Thank heaven for Caller ID.
