Received a call today 5 October 2011 by an Indian sounding man telling me the same as above. I had to ring the following number (02) 6100 4079 and quote A786 claiming my $7000 grant. He would then ring back in a few minutes to confirm that I had received the money. I told him not to bother ringing back as I wasn't going to phone the ATO to confirm. He hung up!! I wasn't surprised to see the various websites exposing this scam!

It seems that all the comments put here by Indians. The scamsters in New Delhi have got hands on database on Indians in Aust and they are dialling them only. I am indian too please warn all non indian Ozzies about this scam and talk rubbish with these fella's and play their own game. Indian cyber cops must be notified by australian embassy in New Delhi immidiately.

I received a call today from the same bastards, they presented themselves as 'Peter' and 'Daniel Watson'. Alarm bells went off in my head because no Indian has a name like that but I decided to play along with their little game and I said my name was Angelina Jolie. When the Indian on the other line heard, she was like 'Give me a few seconds while I check if you are eligible for the $7000 grant' and then she came to the phone 2 seconds later and said 'Yes, dear, you have won a once in a lifetime $7000 grant, it is a one off payment, you are a very lucky'. Obviously, by this time, I was having trouble keeping it together, the hilarity of the situation was getting to me but I kept on and I feigned surprise and said I'd prefer to give my six digit social security number to the manager of the "Bandigo" Bank (that's how she pronounced it, lol) and acted as though I'd never heard of UNICEF. She proceeded to give me a little bit of an explanation about UNICEF but by this time my rage got the better of em and I went off on a rant about how much of a motherf*cker she was and I called her a scamming Indian bitch a few times. My advice is, don't get angry, get even. Play with their little Indian minds.

Just got a call someone chris bryan from ATO and claiming same thing. He asked to call the Canberra office at (02) 8006 1646  right now and speak with a senior officer for further info.

Atif

I got the similar call, I am surprised that we are getting this mess every day and reporting to the police but no one is actually taking action against them.

MJ

I got the same message as others above. I just let them give me reasons for getting $7,000 from ATO. As ATO has all the information about me, they can credit the amount to my account any time.Since these guys are giving numbers in Sydney & Melbourne, ATO should be able to find the users of this number and get them arrested.I am Australian of Indian origin and would not want that reputation of Indians in Australia is destroyed due to work of some stupid people.

Zoe

I just got this call. Some croaky asian lady told me all about how the ATO was going to give me 7 grand for like paying my taxes, and not having a criminal record, ect ect. I was like, 'yeah I'm sorry but its hard to believe this is not a scam' and then they hung up. Yeah. It a scam. Lol.

Sak

I just recived the same call  from someone supposedly from the ATO Melbourne offering me $7,000 for free.

As my dad used to say, Nothing is free in this world!  So as soon as "John" (his made up name) started  to tell me that I can get $7000 from the ATO, in his indian accent I knew it was a scam!

So I replied that if its free, please put the chq in the post to me at the address on the ATO records. He then proceeded to tell me that I need to talk to his supervisor and started giving me the Melbourne ATO telephone number. As he was saying the number, I was typing it into google whilst he was on the line and up popped this website.

So I definitly knew it was a scam, so continued to play along with him and I think he got the impression that I had been sucked in and would call his supervisor!

What a loser! Dont get taken in by these con artists!
