Why can't these kind of businesses be banned? Do these companies actually make money out of this? Who answers calls from unknown numbers anymore? I constantly receive calls from random numbers and never answer. Usually I google the number and add it to an ever-growing list of blocked numbers on my phone. They call home phone and mobile. They call repeatedly, sometimes every couple of hours. How can this be legal?

The reason they hang up is that they are in a small call centre and each person dials several numbers at once. He talks to the first one who answers and automatically hangs up on the rest.

Caller: Client Benefit Services

Have called me many times from 3 different phone numbers over the past 4 days - they hang up immediately upon answering each time.
I called each number back from a landline to find out who each number belonged to - all the same company name.

It's a telemarketer trying to sell you health or funeral insurance. If you are annoyed at these persistent callers, why don't you turn this annoyance you feel into something fun and take the Mickey out of them? Next time they call, tell them you need funeral insurance for a relative that's terminally ill. (Make up this story.). Tell them he's terminally ill. We plan on having a lavish funeral. Because it's not about the money but about family togetherness and presentation is everything for this dearly departed one. We're arranging to hire Limousines, and ferraris, camels, elephants in the procession. Fresh cut white roses all over in the golf country club hall venue hire. Funeral fudge and hors d'oeuvres, will be catered for attendees. Some celebs will attend. They charge attendance fees. The cost is looking around $40,000 figure. I need funeral insurance to cover all that. Can you cover me for that? (Using a Greek Aussie accent) tell them: mate I exsshpect quality insshurance pay out for a lavish funeral, $40,000 mate. And I will pay you a premium $50. In return we need $40,000 bucks, and don't sell me your bullssh!t sshhtory you can't offer that for insurance cover. You rang me mate, and these are the terms and conditions that apply.

Wow! I haven't had any of these calls the last 4 -5 days!
Well, I knew the type of number, but I weakened at the last moment, they are human beings and you never know which poor sod is doing this for a genuine crust.

"James" from xxx ? rings.

Wants to speak to xxxx xxxxxxx (my name).

I say "Who?" (sounding confused 😆)
But he's well trained.

Apparently assured now that he's onto the right person, he ignores that, and continues... informing me the "conversation will be recorded for quality and training purposes".

In a practised seamless monologue, he enquires whether I have any type of insurance or particularly, funeral insura/...CUT! 🚷 ---> 🚽

And.....block! 😬
Could this became an Olympic Sport one day? Y'know... speed and reaction time etc.

Multiple calls from this number to my mobiles and landline. Variety of different stories supporting the same basic fraud. Now blocked! Suggest you add this to your block list, and NEVER ANSWER!!! (How can they be permitted to keep using this number year after year? Sure, they'll start using other numbers, but each number/new number should be blocked by the telcos PROMPTLY, to make it difficult for the scammers.)

Called at 6:30pm - living QLD and no longer answer numbers answer calls with a Vic 03 prefix.
I had answered this number a couple times for them to hang up as soon as I answered. The 3rd time an 'actual' person was on the end of the line. I told them I was not interested in whatever they were trying to sell me and asked to peak to the manager so I could tel him I was on the NO CALL list and to remove my phone number from their data base- not sure sure how much the 'actual' person heard because they had hung up on me.

The guy said he was Mark and just start talking like a recording with 1x forward for 1 minute ish. Didn't even give me any chance to speak, the reason that i didn't hang up immediately but waited for him to finish is that I pay respect to any one is working hard and to make a living.
