Sarah (May 22, 2014) you are wrong. It is a scam and your post indicates that you work for these people.

This is a scam number. They claim to be the ATO but THEY ARE NOT. Beware. They called my brother asking about info in relation to a company I own. Dodgy.

Just had two missed calls from this number and then a call from (02) 8821 8902 with the same story - calling on behalf of the Tax Office about an overdue Tax return or something. Think it is a scam and I told them to send me a letter. Which he was hesitant to do. Not the kind of conversation I expect to have with the Tax Office.

I got a call from this number too. It is the ATO and it is a legitimate call and not a scam. It is from the ATO Early Collections (debt) department. I was sceptical of the caller as well, but they gave me the option of ringing the ATO switchboard to confirm their identity which I did. I am glad I did not hang up, as I found out I had a tax bill which I had not paid (because I forgot about it) and they were really helpful.

Had a call from a foreign speaking man who said he was from the Australian Taxation Office, who told me my name, which I confirmed, and asked if I was the owner of a company and gave me the name of the company. It turns out the company is my brother-in-laws company. I told the guy it was not my company, and that if he was from the Tax Office he would know the name of the owner, and I then said that if he couldn't get the name then this was a scam call and that I was hanging up, which I did.
As far as I know the Taxation Office do not just call people like that - they send out letters. Both my brother-in-law and I have accountants who deal with the Tax Office on our behalf, so I feel this would have been a scam call. PLEASE BE AWARE PEOPLE.
