Just received 'an automated' message from the ATO - from this number - claiming I am being investigated for tax fraud... I hung up and have reported it to the ATO

Received 2 'automated' messages apparently the ATO from this number asking me to urgently call back and to not dismiss the call.
I called back and got an Indian accent male who stated that he was "James Brown" - head of tax fraud investigations claiming I had been investigated for tax fraud and now ATO has a law suit against my name.
Mind you he couln't pronounce the name "James" properly as I got him to repeat it several times after I got him to spell it. He pronounced it as Zane, spelt J A M E S.
He stated that his ID is 9792148 and that my case number was FBD6302442 to sound all legitimate.
He read from a script constantly and told me to "listen very carefully and don't interrupt and at the end he will give me time to ask 'WESSHUN'." I repeated the sentence to him and asked if he meant "QUESTIONS". He reread his script and again said 'WESSHUN'. I didn't know whether to laugh out loud at this point and tell him to learn English properly... is that racist? :D But I let him continue.
He read out his script apparently with all the frauds that I was being charged with and have a lawsuit against me, quoting legislation numbers of which I had switched off and let him babble. He then concluded with the script, "within 15 minutes your assets will be frozen, your house and car will be seized. Your name will be blacklisted on the national database. Within half an hour there will be a warrant for your arrest. You will go to jail for 5 years and have a fine of $90000. If you have any WESSHUN please ask me now."
My response was "I want to see all the documentation from the ATO. I want them sent to my lawyer and why has my accountant not received any of this notifications?"
He proceeded to reread part of the script. I interrupted and told him to send me documentation. He replied that he doesn't need to prove anything to me and that if I didn't believe him, I should hang up and I'll be arrested in half an hour. And he repeatedly said that until I told him sure, I'll wait to be arrested thanks.
He ended the call with "Have a nice day."
I told him to have a fantastic day." *LOL*

To the person I was talking to on the phone... you are such a noob. I hope you feel proud of your job... I hope you can honestly look your parents and family in the eyes and tell them exactly what you do for a living. Because I can truly say you are a big joke in society... thanks for entertaining me this morning. *LOL*

For past 3 weeks (August, 2017), I received a many calls from pretending to be ATO (Australian Taxation Office) from the following numbers:
(03) 9561 0483 ( I have forgotten about the scammer's accent)
(02) 6145 2429 (Scammer with Indian Accent)
(03) 4309 4130 (Scammer with Indian Accent)

Today, Friday, 22/09/2017, I received another call from the following numbers, scammers pretending to be ATO again:
(03) 4309 4087 (Scammer with Indian Accent), It seems that their telephone no. has gone up from (03) 4309 4087 to (03) 4309 4130. Please do something about this numbers: (03) 4130 4xxx, I am expecting that the telephone numbers will keep going up. Please arrest them, they are very annoying.
I am also getting calls today from +343094034, auto voice playing back. Seems that my number has been sold or share between scammers. Please do something.

This is the third time they've tried to hit me. The first I accidentally answered (I screen all unknown numbers these days - so many scammers & telemarketers), got all the palaver about them sending the police within 15 mins to seize everything & arrest me, read very badly from a script. I told him it was a scam & he quickly hung up. I reported it to the Australian Tax Office - they have a scam reporting service: https://www.ato.gov.au/about-ato/about-us/contact-us/report-fraud,-scams,-tax-evasion-or-a-tax-planning-scheme/

I've had the same as all the previous commenters... from this number, which I blocked and now today from (03) 4309 4129, so obviously they use other numbers as well.

Here's my question, which some of you may be able to answer. Because, I just don't get it.

What's the point of these calls? Besides being time wasters and annoying and as one person said giving them a lol. I mean he hasn't asked for money to be sent anywhere ect...so, am I missing something here?

A-holes rang x3 times from the above number (03) 4309 4130 and then a private number left indistinguishable voicemail to "ring back and not to dismiss call" whatever....they are scammers and rude. blocked them

when I answered it was an automated message supposedly from ATO (with a foreign accent). I hung up and blocked the number. 3 hours later they left a message on my messagebank (cos of blocked number) saying to ring this number straight away and do not ignore the message. Such scumbags!!!

It is a scam, the usual Indian voice. The call comes from a Victoria number but probably via internet from India. Hang up.

Also received 'an automated' message from the ATO - from this number - claiming I am being investigated for tax fraud. I did talked to them but worked out this wasn't genuine. I reported to the ATO who confirmed I wasn't being taken to court. Always check who the caller is by asking a reference number and a phone number which should be publicly listed. If they don't want to give it to you, then it's not the ATO.

The giveaway is the fact the phone is answered immediately with no voice prompts or hold time ;)
