It's a legit number. This is the number Optus calls you from if they need to talk to you. I was on a live chat with a Optus Representative and they asked me to give them a number for them to call me back on.

May 2022
I received a voicemail stating that there was an issue to discuss about my Optus account and asked me to call back.
My prepaid number (no package deal attached) was transferred to Telstra some time ago.
It does not make sense and block the number.

2022
I got a missed call SMS and called back by using a different phone number (ie. not the one received SMS and with a different service provider on different device). The number (02) 8049 2850 was disconnected (same day message received). The missed call message came with the instruction to retrieve the voicemail by dialling 101. My service provider does not use this number for the voicemail service.
After viewing over 8 pages of conflicting comments here, my understanding is as follow
1) Scammers maybe hide in the shadow of Optus business (including agents / contractors) therefore conflicting comments were posted here.
2) A company will not allow or use a disconnected number to run it's business in the normal circumstance. It is not an acceptable customer service on silence / hang up when the call is connected. Customers are contacted on reasonable business hours.
2) In 2022, large Australia-wide companies have their Australian customer services number starting with 13 or 1300 for customer convenience. When required, the call will be forwarded to the designated customer services team, in Australia or overseas. Limitation on state-restricted services are removed or minimised on particular local phone number.
3) Persons visited this web usually with the concern or feeling something is not right. This is human nature. Someone may take advantage to abuse the situation.
4) Anyone can access this web site and posted comments, with honest intention to alert others or from scammers to cover up their tracks.
5) Majority of the comments on this number were posted pre 2019, which was the peak period of migration to NBN.
6) Voice message on 13 number instruction, this maybe the follow up action taken on the scam / spam call issues.
For consideration, when in doubt:
Try using other device to call back the main customer service number 13+ / 1300+. Let them forwarding your call to designated customer services team when required. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER provided to minimise the risk as this number maybe contaminated.
Hope the above information is useful.
PS. I call this number again days later. There is a voice message instruction to call 13+ number instead.

This number called me, disconnected my mobile and hacked into my phone. They withdrew all our money from all accounts. Under investigation by police and bank. Contact police if this happens to you and block all internet banking ASAP.

If it is Optus, the CEO of Optus should be very concerned that the call centre operators they hire are being flagged as scammers.

This is a scam and not Optus calling you. Do not pick up and do not respond. They simply want access to your phone. Do not call back

Caller: Definitely optus This is quite strange, I got a missed call and called the number back, says "Optus advises that the number you have dialled is disconnected etc etc"
They called back this evening and I answered, turns out it's one of the Optus counterparts I've been working with on a project for a client next week. This is from Optus Malaysia, weirder thing is when I answered it the caller ID then changed to possibly his actual extension - I don't know wether this is because I'm on Optus too?
So I'd say if you've answered and they've asked for some personal information just say you'll call back a verified optus number - I wouldn't be comfortable just giving my details to anyone that calls.

Caller: Optus? Couldn’t tell if spam or not. Was chatting on the Optus app, then the calls started. 4 calls, 2 voicemails, one just saying she was the person I was chatting with, then the second voicemail from someone else saying he was the first person’s supervisor, saying they were checking if my voicemail was working. Very weird, no need for them to call as the chat was nothing major, and was not heated or rude in anyway.
