An elderly client of our tax practice rang and asked about the refund he was due to receive from the ATO and asked for his DOB and bank details...was told to call back on this number and ask for Gary Smith....I called and when questioned the Indian sounding guy hung up.....

had the same call today and when i didnt call the 02 800 number he called me back so i just picked it up and sat the phone in front of tv speakers it took 3 minutes for him to hang up lol

Exactly what happened to me in the last 2 days of persistant calling when asked the caller for more details, the call was disconnected

I had the same call as all the others above luckily i knew not to give out bank details...what i want to know with so many complaints from the same number and the fact they are disguising themselves as an Australian Government Rebate department with a phone number of (02) 8007 4754 why has telstra not banned this number from the system and why is the government not doing anything about it, i had'nt heard anything in the media and when they told me to deposit money at the post office and i would get a legal reciept as i should be aware that the post office is also a government agency i told them no but if they would like to post the cheque to me and when the money cleared i would happily pay the $199 lawyers fee the lady Pamela Petersen responded with i will talk to my manager and see if we can post the cheque first. With that i hung up. I don't see how these people are still doing this as i can see that back in october 2012 people are posting on this scam, come on Telstra and government agencies, protect your so called beloved Australia and the people here that call Australia home and start making some arrests and alerting citizens to this scam as i have heard nothing about it!!!

Had a call this morning with the same story as others. Googled the number and found this site. They're cunning

Yep a man phoned me saying he was from the govt refund dept and that they had run some checks for people in my area !@# and that I was overcharged $5214. I could have it by chq or deposit - I said post a chq. He gave me an Application Code of AG94 and That I had to call (02) 8007 4754 and give that code to either Pamela Peterson or Gary Smith and they would mail a chq in 24/48 hrs. The caller was an Indian sounding bloke reading from a script. My phone number is in a false name because I will not pay Telstra a n extra cent for simply wanting an unlisted number - and this example of calls/letters wanting to pay money to a non-existent person is not the first!!! INDIAN SCAM!!!

Same issue they said I was going to get a cheque for $5280 but I had to pay $199 TO POST OFFICE FIRST TO SOMEONE IN KATHMANDU Via Western Union.

I still have my $199. What a scam!!!

they just called me then about the same thing $5k but gotta pay 200 up front first lol so i told them i had to ask my uncle jackie chan for a loan lol

I received a call like this weeks ago and hanged up on them. They never gave up they just called me again today saying I was gettinga cheapque of $5248 dollar yeah right like there gonna send a cheque. Like it shouldn't matter what banking I'm with any bank can accept cheques from other banks. Don't be fooled ppl this is a scam. They ask you to call Gary or Pamela to give them a application code, I never called them and never will.

Mentally disabled aunty got a call from Pamela, informing her she had a cheque from the Govt for overpaid bills to the sum of $5,000. They had her name, DOB and ph number and also gave a fake ref # when asked. Called back after 20 minutes to get my aunts bank details and then promptly hung up when my aunt told them she had spoken to the police regarding the call. 100% SCAM REPORTED TO SCAMWATCH WEBSITE AND LOCAL POLICE

We got 2 call from Sam Adams saying that the government was going to give us $5,248. congratulation for been the one they have choice you yeah right that is right now you must ring 02 800 747 54 and give them your code as I told you,you have pen and paper you must ring them yeah right you must keep on ring until you get someone and they will tell you what to would ok thanks, I ring them now,, Calling hello you have a number for me yep I do it is ##### thanks now you must go to the Post office and pay $299 into oh yes I forgot to tell you, you must ring me and I will tell you how to sent the money for the Lawyer who got this money for you, But hey can"t you take it from the cheque you going to sent me,, No you must go to the Post Office right How far you from the Post Office are you going to the Post Office today, No not today , Ok I will ring in the morning ok . So that Robert Wilson can bring you your Cheque number is 65254 within 24 hours.

This morning Pamela rang me back ok you going to the Post Office today, hang on what the name of the Lawyer, you don't need to know that you are going to money for what he did for you , Oh Pamela you are a F**ken Scam

Yes, SCAM BIG TIME...I was told I was selected randomly by the Aust Govt to receive $5000! I was told to ring Pamela on this (02) 8007 4754 who would organise for someone to come to my home to deliver the cheque.

Had the call today re refund for overpayment on electricity and phone bills. Asian caller, they must think we are simple.

Just got this call from an Indian sounding fellow. Wanted to give us $5288 which we had been overcharged. He asked for my DOB and bank name. After refusing, asked to speak to his supervisor. Caled Pamela Petersen. She gave the same story and said there would be a one off $299 lawyer fee. That is what they are working up to.

The same thing happened to my elderly mother last week (Jan 2013). Caller purported to be from the Finance Dept of Australia. My mother was all set to send money thru Western Union when fortunately my sister found out & stopped her. Since then my mother's had another phone call from these people annoyed that she hasn't sent the money! I'm so angry that they prey on the elderly who get so confused & anxious.

3/01/2013 This scam is still going. Asian voice, male, wanted my DOB and which Bank did I deal with. Asked for his manager. Gave me 2 names: Pamela Peterson and Jacqueline Douglas. Gave him false DOB and bank. Idiot.

yes had same call about 5k today and to call back tommorrow with an rr number

I also got the same call from the same mob and, ten minutes later, got another one asking why I had not called the supervisor (Pamela Peterson) on the above number - seemed most put out that I hadn't called back! What puzzles me is how does the scam work? Is it some form of identity fraud? Basic bank details (name account number etc., which they didn't ask for in the first call, wouldn't give them access without passwords, signature etc.. Does anyone have any theories?
