My wife just got the call, so it's still happening. Yes, she gave them her DOB.
Surely there's a law against it?

Yes another one. Stupid lying foreigners. Rang back the number I was given and I told the female that I wanted to speak to Angelia Cooper, she said that was her I said that had rang the Federal Police, she said thanks for that and hung up.
Why cant the Telco companies do anything about these dishonest people, this scam has been ongoing for several months at least.
Also reported to Scam Watch.

I also was offered the same $7,268 refund but prior to receiving the cheque I was to go to the post office and pay $250 for the government 's legal fees. I promised to pay as soon as the cheque cleared but that apparently was not the way it works. When they misspelt Mathias Cormann's name I was the sure they were full of it. Why can't something be done about whoever is operating from that number? Surely this sort of thing is not legal?

My dad received this call March 16th. Unfortunately, he quoted his DOB too. Called Police assitance line and was told to report it to scamwatch 1 (03) 0079 5995 or https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/ Was assured that giving DOB would not compromise any accounts as more security checks are needed by banks etc for access. Still.....feel very uneasy about this! Told dad not to divulge his DOB on phone to anyone that RINGS him.
Hope this helps! Stay safe.

i received a call 3rd March 2015(yesterday) and was told i was getting a refund from being overcharged from bank fees. ($7268 refund). I was asked if i would like it deposited into my account or be sent a cheque. I opted for a cheque and was told to call back the above number tomorrow (today) as office hours were closing. Stupid me gave out my d.o.b and they now know my address and phone number as well. I really wish i gave false information. What a trap. I am reporting this left, right and centre. Be warned of these sick scammers . Rotten people.

They need the Post Office to be open so if you call back outside business hours they ask you to call again the next day (see comment above about sending them money). If you have lots of free calls on your phone keep calling them and then hang up when they answer. They have to answer in the hope that they are going to get your cash.

lol i was given number and the names Angelina Cooper and Keith Rankin as the people to call tomorrow at 11am. i asked why they needed to call me to send a cheque and to just send it, i was also told i had been sent out mail 2 times with paperwork to fill in but that i never returned said paperwork and that was why they were now phoning me instead. instead of waiting till 11 am tomorrow i rang the number and it was answered by Angelina Cooper who asked can i please call back tomorrow as the agency was now closing. might give a call tomorrow at 11 if im bored enough and ask a heap of dumb questions before telling them to....... well im sure you get the idea !

I had the same call too - some Indian guy call John Brown - ready to send me $7268 by cheque as a gift from the Australian Government for being incorrectly overcharged by banks. "A $1 here, $2 there - it all adds up fast lady..." I gave him a fake DOB. He asked me to call his managers Angelina Cooper or Alice Wilson (surely Alice Cooper would have been more believable ha ha) on (02) 8006 0501 and quote S11 reference number. Yeah......I'll be doing that real soon.... He had my surname and address but not first name - wonder if they are getting this info from the White Pages phone directory?

What can these scammers do if you happen to have divulged your DOB? I gave no other information, but they had everything else, like my name and address and phone number (obviously). I feel foolish giving my real DOB but thought that was OK as they had all else. It's hard when other organisations (legit ones) ask for the same details and you're supposed to verify. Telstra do and so do electrical company's and with those company's using overseas staff it is not a matter of just disregarding someone with an accent.

I just got exactly the same phone call and before I knew it I gave my DOB. I've informed my bank so they can put a security alert on the profile. Do we tell the police?

I had two similar calls in two days with a Paki or Indian accent. I told them "go fornicate with yourself"...(you get the picture!!) He says to me with his Indian accent "You are a very rude man!!" . "Yes I am" I says, "call me again and you'll get some more!!" Sadly, I've never had a call back. Been 6 months now. Don't mess around with these stupid people.! Be firm!

They called last night and want me to call back today. I gave my date of birth and they had my name and address. I won't call back today but what can they do with my date of birth, name and address?
This is very scary.

Just got a call from 'The Finance Department of the Australian Federal Government', Yeah right!! Miss India accent told me that I'm being reimbursed $7,268 from my bank overcharging me.. Oh OK Thanks! She then read out my home address to confirm where they'll post the cheque. All I had to do was call 02 8006.0501 and ask for Angela Cooper or Alice Wilson give them my application code NP18. Who know what the hell they're trying to do, but seriously, I've had enough of scammers.. Don't waist my time!!

Damn .. I heard nothing about the $7000 ... my one must have got confused as she was saying I was going to get a cheque for $268 ..
Really .. If you were going to pull a scam like that .. get trained peeps on the line.
I once kept a Windows person on line for 48 mins .. (computer was in one room and the phone in the other). Kept having to go "back and forth" while I watched my shows. Wasn't much working space with this one .. kept asking her how her day was .. what the view was like .. that I'm enjoying lunch and would she like to eat lunch with me ...

Yes, we had already realised this was a scam. While we played along for a while, once they wanted date of birth, we terminated the call fairly quickly. I wonder whether any authority can stop this number?!?
