I just got a call from MARK DAWSON who claims to be from the Windows certified support desk. He gave me the following number 02900372906. He says his database can see that my comp has a lot of virus and told me to get pen and paper ready...I told him i'll check into that and will call him back later (which of course I wouldn't) BUT sh*tT....I CAN'T BELIEVE HE HAS MY ADDRESS!!! How do these culprits get that?!

Don't give the caller any information.  They bombard you with questions about your computer, what software you are running and then want to sell you stuff.  From the posts above mine, I believe they are up to no good.  A woman named Nancy called me and wouldn't give me any information about the company except after asking many times she said "Help Desk Support" and had to put me on hold to get a phone number for the company which was a Sydney number (02) 8005 6756.

Just hang up.

I got a call at 8.00am on a Sunday morning from a caller identifying himself as Prem or Prince (Indian accent).  He said he was calling from the Computer Help Desk at Microsoft and that my computer had been sending them error messages that indicated my machine was receiving hacking files which could not be rid of with security software.  He asked me to run eventvwr.  As I didn't know what it was, and I didn't trust him, I asked for his phone number so I could call him back.  He gave it to me.  I checked on the internet what eventvwr was and called him back.  He answered, so I thought he was legit.  Then he asked me to go onto the internet and run logme in rescue and type in my 6-digit code.  I quickly looked up in a separate window the phone number that he had given me and got everyone's experience with this phone number.  I will report to Microsoft.

Do NOT fall for this. They will try to take control of your computer, and install malware on it.This problem has been plaguing the UK too. They tried that on me, told them my machine was running Linux.

I had a phone from the above number claiming they were checking people with windows program on their computer.  The guy gave his name as Alan Donald job id 107 and company name was helpdesk Lavel.  I asked how did they know I had windows and he replied from a windows  database.  I had my doubts, but continued with the phone call.  They ran a scan on my computer and all these warning and error message appeared making it very convincing. They then tried to tell me that we hadn't kept security up on my computer and were about to ask for money.  I told them that I'm going to call my husband to check with him.  The phone call ended shortly after.  I called the above number twice and they answered saying Helpdesk Lavel.
