got the same type of call as others said she was from reclaim department of the deparment of finance for the Australian Government and that I was owed over 5K for bank fees. Lady called said she was in Pitt st sydney but sounded like call was from overseas. Gave me a reference no to quote when I called this number. when I called phone rang then cut off. Never gave any details but makes you wonder if it establishing some kind of link.

I had this call today from a male with a strong (Indian) accent. He had all my details and asked to confirm my DOB. I kept insisting that if he was from the Gvt then he already had my details. He gave me a reference number and wanted me to call his manager Sherry Johnston, it was a different phone number 02 80910 5666. He also asked what bank I would like the chq drawn from.

in this one the scam is account fees from bank, amount 5600, but a lawyer needs to be paid 199 before you can get your money, my husband got the call, out of work in need for money he thought it was real. went to post office to get western union paperwork and was given details of supposed lawyer, Unfortunately we have separated and dean has the paperwork, with the name of a person in Nigeria. I've had the same call from an Indian Lady saying I was owed over $5k for overcharged bank fees. She gave me this number and an address in 123 Pitt St as well as a ref no. She asked for bank details which I did not provide as I was worried about a scam. Glad I didnt!

Indian lady said I was owed $5,2000.48 due to overpayment of utility bills, said I would have a chq. gave ref no and called back. she said I need to go to a post office and get a bank order to pay for overseas solicitor for the sum of $198.00. Said no. She said that wirhout payment could not give me the chq.

got a call to say we had been overcharged by over 5k and would we like a cheque or give details of bank account for deposit. she was not australian and gave this number for contact. no answer

got a call from a bank reclaim some bloke said he was in Sydney told me I was over charged by a bank just over 5k and he would send me a cheque like the other bloke he gave me the name of Dominic Walker said he would ring back I didn't give him my bank details he never rang back

got a call from someone in india saying that I'm owed approx $5,000. and would sent out a cheque in the next 24/48hrs. had to confirm my details. he had my address, date of birth. he wanted me to give him my banking details. (i didn't ) he gave a phone number a ref# number

I have had the exact same phone call myself has to be a scam wish they would get a real job and stop trying to rip honest working people off!!!

Like you people I checked the internet before ringing the number. I am on the do not call list so calls like this I know are always a scam. They usually ring me each day saying they are from microsoft and I have a virus, trying to get control of the computer, watch out for that one lucky I used to be an I.T manager and knew what they were telling me to do was for them to get control of my computer. Go here https://www.donotcall.gov.au/index.cfm and register your number it is free, so then when you get these calls you know they are a scam.

Yes the scam is still going - I have had a number of calls - saying no it isn't a scam - but I was owed $5248 - funny that it is the same amount as the other people who have registered.  I spoke to a person called Norman - and was told that if I paid $199 at the post office - that once I registered my receipt no that I would have a cheque deliverd - the cheque had to be paid to Western Union - that rung bells for me - they said the Government used overseas lawyers because they were cheaper - now that I have got round to checking the number - it is most definitely a scam.  They must be trying to make lots of money - everyone I spoke to had an indian accent.  Watch out.

I received a call from a number on Thursday 24/08/2012 and they told me that the government were reimbursing people money that was over charged though electricity, gas and other ammenity companys. I was told that i was entitled to a payment of $5248.00 and to call (02) 8003 7595 with an application number to get the payment sent to me by check. I called the number and quoted the application code and I was told that a cheque was going to be delivered and I would have to pay $195.00 through Western Union before the payment was to be delivered. The $195.00 was for lawyer fees that the government has employed to do the investigation of over charges. I feel this is a scam. I dont believe if you are being overcharged that you shouldnt have to pay any fees.

Just had the same type of call. She rang back asking why I have not called the manager and quoted the reference number. So called and when i rang the number it cut out after a couple of rings. Luckily I googled the number after and found this site, I'll know what to do in the future.

Same as all the others, I also  received a call on 25 September (so this has been on-going for some time now) and they told me the SAME RUBBISH that I was  entitled to a payment of $5248.00 and to call (02) 8003 7595 with an application number to get the payment sent to me by cheque.. Didn't call, rang Consumer Affairs Scam Watch 1300 558 181 instead and reported it.
