received SMS from someone pretending to be Paypal, saying someone attempted to charge large amount to my Paypal account and to call this number if not authorized by me. asking me to call this number.

Same as above. Received text stating "Confirm! Your code is 37519 to transfer 9809.00 AUD via PayPal. If suspicious please call +61 1800 565 876".
Text received from a number different to usual PayPal number. PayPal verification codes are 6 digits not 5.
Total scam.

I just received a similar SMS with message to confirm a random code number to transfer 980.00 AUD via PAYPAL. This it says if suspicious, please call +61 1800 565 876.
This is definitely a scam which I have reported!

Received an SMS from this number claiming to be PayPal. Saying "A transaction of $1,790.00 attempted on your account. Today at 12:03pm (GMT+10) If this is not you? call 1800 565 876 immediately." I don't have a PayPal account.

Sae as earlier comment. Text message saying a charge of A$1,790.00 was attempted on your PayPal account at (time same as tome message sent) and to call this number. Message sender was "JD-PAYPL". I didn't call... I manually checked my PayPal a/c and no messages or unrecognised charges / transactions. Therefore this 100% SCAM.
