It's funny how people say scam, when they haven't even looked at the ATO website.
It's the third last number on the bottom of the page, and it clearly states Switchboard.
13 28 69 is the ATO Switchboard. Scroll down the page, it's listed at the bottom. This is not the ATO, look up website ato.gov.au contact us, real number is 132865 which is slightly different to this bogus number. Total scam, hang up don't talk to them. It is the ato office. Main switch board. Not a scam Caller: Chris Molnar
This person called and asked me to call him on 132869 ext 53781 today 30th 11 2020 by 3pm and i thought it sounded suspect. ?????
Caller: Australian Tax Office (switchboard).
It is legitimate. the number was masked. I spoke to a polite lady and asked if I could call back as was aware of scam calls, and she gave me the number with her extension, said would send confirmation email to account on file, and sms. I checked ATO website and it was switchboard number. I called that and asked for "****" and that I thought it was extension ****** they confirmed and put me through.
Caller: Nenita Bennett
Could you check for me the call 03.62210403 from ATO . Thanks a lot .
132865 is the ATO Line for personal tax - self help. 132869 is the ATO switchboard number. Depends on which scan alert site you look at. There are several legitimate numers and 13 28 69 is one of them.
This was on the Money Magazine site. http://moneymag.com.au/ato-issues-phone-scam-warning/
Tax phone scam: key points to remember
• The ATO would never cold-call you about a debt. If you have a debt you will receive a letter or SMS to remind you that a payment is due in the first instance.
• The ATO would never threaten jail or arrest.
• If you receive a call from the ATO and are concerned about its legitimacy, ask for the caller’s name and phone back through the ATO’s switchboard on 132 869.
i had an email re ABN listing that number and i didn't ring it but rang the australian business register on 139226 and they said it was a real email. don't ignore the email - just look up a number and initiate contact from your end so that you can be satisfied. if i didn't call they would have cancelled my abn Scam! Scam! Scam! Where does the ATO say to call 132869 ?
That is the scam number you just mentioned !
From the following link: https://www.ato.gov.au/Media-centre/Media-releases/Don-t-fall-for-phony-tax-debt-scam/ the correct number is 1800 008 540.
ATO says the following :
“We would never cold call you about a debt; we would never threaten jail or arrest, and our staff certainly wouldn’t behave in an aggressive manner. If you’re not sure, hang up and call us back on 1800 008 540,” said Mr Leeper."
