I don't "think" the same thing, I know it. I am a tax agent and have daily contact with the ATO about clients. If you read my post I said they won't call you UNLESS you are an authorised person and that has to be done in writing. You would know if you are a contact person for another, it wouldn't come out of the blue. If anyone gets any calls supposedly from the ATO, they should simply go onto ato.gov.au and look up the telephone numbers in the contact area and then ring those numbers back. You also need to be careful as the debt collectors for the ATO will tell you they are from the ATO when they are not. The number shown here is NOT AN ATO PHONE NUMBER.

1300 466 859 and 1300 880 217 are ATO debt collection contact numbers, I would suggest anyone that receive a voicemail from them to check their or the mentioned entity ATO account balance either through myGov account linked to the ATO for individuals/sole traders or using the Business Portal (Auskey is required). This will verify that you do have an outstanding debt. I would then contact these numbers if your still unsure about these numbers, either contact the ATO switchboard on 13 28 69 or the general ATO debt area on 13 11 42.

Don't believe anyone on here that says that this number is legitimately from the ATO. It is not. It is a scam. There are numerous posts on this site that are incorrect and it is very easy for anyone to post on this page. I have no vested interest in giving you false information. The people purporting to be accountants and from the ATO on this page clearly do. Call the ATO directly from a publicly listed number if you are in doubt. In general, if you owe the ATO money, they will come and find you - and a posted letter is always sent.

The comments saying this is a genuine phone number are part of the SCAM. Remember anybody can post a message here. To to ato's website to get a contact phone if you need to call them.

This number 1300 880 217 is and ATO number which is given out for people to call back on as they have a debt with the ATO.
Yes you should be wary about scams and you can always call the ATO back on a general number and get transferred though to debt but this is definitely an ATO number for the debt area

I looked it up as I received the call, and a large tax debt, and checked the ato website.

Check the website yourself, and if you cant find it, then ring a general number and ask them if thats a number of theirs.

I have checked with the ATO and confirmed this is payment call back line from the ATO.

1300 880 217, defiantly not the ATO. Do not give out any personal information to someone that calls you. If you are concerned that someone is not who they say they are, let them know that you don't feel comfortable giving out personal information over the phone, and you will call the ATO in your own time!

Check the website have i been pawned. It will tell if you have compromised. I received a call from 1300 880 217. I checked this site and yes two of my services were. This not the ATO.

The ATO would send an official letter. No matter what the circumstances or no matter how much the tax debt or tax refund may be.

Wait for something in writing. If they don't identify themselves and it's not a standard number listed in white pages then why should you trust them. So many scams out there.

This is an ATO number, I could not find a reference to the phone number from the ATO so I called a number that was listed, the lady at the ATO looked it up and confirmed that an outbound phone call from the ATO was placed and the return number was 1300 880 217.

If you are ever in doubt, look up the contact phone numbers on the ATO website and call those numbers. It pays not to ignore ATO calls.
