The idea that the ATO do not make outbound calls is ludicrous. The ATO cannot operate without making outbound calls. Why would you be asked to provide your phone number on your tax return if this wasn't the case?? What concerns me the most are posts from BAS/Tax Agents claiming 1300 466 859 is is a scam number. If you have received a message to call 1300 466 859 then it is because your client has a debt with the ATO. If you ignore this then you will end up with a very angry client hammering down your door after their bank account has been garnisheed. And then you will end up calling the ATO on 1300 466 859 as this is the number listed on the garnishee notice...

I had a call from ATO, double checked it is a number from ATO to call them back.
I thought it is a fraud but ATO confirmed it was from them.

Just got a call while on another call. Went to VM. When I played it back the Indian sounding female said she was with the ATO and I had two days to call 1 (03) 0046 6859 back. I started reading this site for help - so many back and forth about it being/not being a scam. The 1 (03) 0046 6859 is a genuine number with the ATO - However...

It clearly states: "The ATO would never cold call you about a debt. If you have a debt you will receive a letter or SMS to remind you that a payment is due in the first instance."
I have received nothing in the mail and I have not received any notification from my accountant - so I won't be calling until I do.

This is a genuine number, I thought its a scam as well. But I called ATO , then confirmed its genuine , Its their debt collection area. ITS NOT A SCAM,

I've just received a call from an anonymous number - lady said she is from ATO. I told her to leave her number, we will call back. And she gave me this number 1300 466 859. I was suspicious so I called ATO directly and they confirmed it a SCAM and this number is not on their list. Bloody scammers

It looks like a scam. The number is NOT listed on the ATO site anywhere - including in its list of legitimate 'collection agencies':

This is a scam.

I got the same call on Monday 20/04/2015 leaving a message for me to call this number back with all my personal details including TFN for verification. I called ATO, was told they do not ask for TFN over the phone ever. ATO contact via letter with reference number for us to call them back.

Its the debt collectors on behalf of ATO

I rang them back subsequent to them calling where I work to verify this wasn't a scam and even though I'm not on record as the authorised contact at the business matey on the other end of the line decided he'd take it upon himself to start questioning me regarding my personal situation and wanting to have a look into my personal file. He seemed somewhat bemused when I told him I had absolutely ZERO intention of discussing anything regarding my personal situation with him when the initial call to us had been regarding my employers business.

Perhaps you are indeed the scammer here or you have some ATO debts that you would not want to discuss with ATO. If you are confident as you pretend to be, go engage an Accountant or Tax Agent just so to satisfy your false belief or pretentious belief.

What a ridiculous thing to expect anyone with a brain to do, given all the information online claiming this is a scam number. " I'm sorry sir you should have listened to "Steve" on reverseaustralia, Bob,Ato,RD,Ian,Big Mike,Scam and I.P. Freely were all spreading misinformation, didn't you know ??

Everybody saying it's a scam should probably neck themselves. You can literally see the number on there website - and the Ato DO call over debts. Just only sh*t c*nts - you know you have an outstanding debt so why don't you just f*cking pay it instead of being a worthless deasbeat

The ATO definitely do have a Early debt collections department

I checked ATO site and this number is listed as debt collections dept. unsure if to ring them

I received a msg today 19/1/2023 to call ATO 1300 466 859 within two days re tax obligation. I am 100% sure that I don't owe any unpaid tax to ATO as my accountant is taking care all of this for us and I had received a letter from ATO confirm my payment and thanking me for my contribution etc. So my conclusion is that this is a SCAM 100%

If anyone urging you that this type of call is legit then they could be part of the SCAM. If not then why not post their real name, address and contact number so we can report to the police for further investigation.

Caller: Private Number 1300 466 859

Left message to contact 1300 466 859. She sound like Australian accent old woman. Afterwards spelling the number to contact ( above ) she immediately proceeded to leave a ticket or reference number. Afterwards probably She forgot to have given me the reference number and say " Sorry ; your ticket number is bla bla bla " . I could tell is a scam. Be careful.

This is the official ATO payment support call back number you can find it under contact us on ATO‘s website. This is not a scam call, in most cases may have to do with failure to lodge BAS Or other outstanding payments.Or other outstanding payments
