Called twice in one day. First time clicks on the line then a recorded voice said "goodbye"; second time claimed to be from Telstra. I now regard all calls from 08... (I've has others) as scams and don't answer with my name to avoid giving them anything they might use.

Caller: Scammer pretending to be from Telstra

The usual thing: Slow internet, from Telstra, of course, as I wouldn't know this myself already since I just mailed a letter to Telstra to ask why scammers know about the slow internet and Telstra apparently doesn't.

Very persistent person with foreign sounding accent. His name: Austin Harrison. Would have been a hoot if it had been 'Austin Powers'. Due to my reluctance to fix the internet connection myself he gave me his Telstra (of course) reference number 8100145892, the employee number COA4AIQ and, of course, the number to ring to verify that the call is genuine. Here is the number for verification: (08) 8967 1837 :D
The threat was that my internet will be disconnected if I don't do anything now.

The following is the response by Telstra to an email inquiry regarding scammers:

"I have received your inquiry regarding hoax call. On behalf of Telstra, please accept my sincere apology for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

BigPond will not, in any way, threat our customer about something on their computer and would never provide individual customer information to any other person unless required by law. I can assure you that BigPond® and Telstra take its legal responsibility when dealing with personal details very seriously and as such are unable to provide details to any third party/non authorised representatives without first obtaining the account holder's consent to do so.

We have our own Anti-virus software which is Telstra Online Security/Telstra Broadband Protect but we never called customer just to threatened them that they have viruses on their computers.

If you ever receive a call from someone you do not know wanting your personal information, credit card details or on the pretense of a security issue with your computer, here are some simple steps to follow:

• If you receive a phone call out of the blue from someone about your computer system’s security status, hang up;
• NEVER give a stranger remote access to your computer;
• Do not give out your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came
from a trusted source;
• Make sure your computer is protected with anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a good firewall - but only purchase the software
from a source that you know and trust;
• If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution
immediately;

You can report a scam/hoax to SCAMwatch (the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) via:

https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/reportascam

If you have any other queries you can get support online 24x7 with our Help and Support <http://telstra.com/help> service.

Thank you for choosing BigPond."

Called say they were from Telstra and wanted to check my internet. Only thing was I was waiting for Telstra to repair my phone and internet. So I had no internet for them to remote in and if they were genuine they would have known that. Scammer

I suspect a SCAM, they called twice in one day and the minute I said who I was they hung up. I tried calling them back but always 'engaged'

Got a call from an unlisted number allegedly from Telstra. This was the number he gave me to call to check his ID. He wanted to test internet speed by gaining remote access to my device. I told him to call back in an hour but he didn't want to do that so I hung up on him.
