They said they are calling from Queensland about I used my ID registered a phone number in Shanghai, and that phone number was used for criminal stuff. It is a scam.

Caller: scam

I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else.

I had received genuine follow-up calls from the police before, so when I got this call, I honestly thought it was another call from the police.

The caller spoke fluent English with no strong accent and sounded very calm and professional. She confirmed my name and even knew my recent travel history, which made me believe the call was real.

She then told me that the police were investigating a fraud case and that someone had used my passport details. She said I had been listed as the main suspect. Because she knew some of my personal information, I slowly started to believe her.

When I said my personal information might have been stolen, she told me that because I was willing to cooperate, she could help me open a new case. She then said she would transfer me to another department.

Luckily, my husband immediately told me it was a scam.

To make sure, I called 000 straight away. The local police officer confirmed that there were no cases involving me and said I could visit a police station if I wanted further confirmation.

I also called Beenleigh Police Station, and they told me right away that it was definitely a scam.

Looking back, what made the scam so convincing was that the caller had some real personal information and sounded completely normal. Nothing felt suspicious at the beginning.

I'm sharing this because I hope it helps others. Even if someone knows your personal information and sounds very professional, don't trust the call. Hang up and contact the police or the organisation directly using their official phone number.
