Supposedly calling on behalf of Victorian police regarding a safety survey. Unreliable and difficult to prove legitimacy.

The callers contacting you from this mobile number are from the Social Research Centre, a subsidiary of the Australian National University (legit). They are conducting the National Survey of Community Satisfaction with Policing (NSCSP) for their client, the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA - also legit. They are based in Melbourne).

This is the only Australian survey to provide nationally comparable data regarding public satisfaction with police and police services and is considered a key indicator of service quality.

The information gathered from this survey is used as part of the annual Report on Government Services and to monitor and report on policing performance at state and national levels. I can attest to that as prior to my retirement, I used to work on annual Report on Government Services.

The survey is your opportunity to provide feedback on satisfaction with policing and local safety concerns or issues. They do not ask you any personal or identifying information, and you can skip any question you might be uncomfortable with.

However, please note that the people hired to make the calls DO NOT NEED TO HOLD ANY FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS. They only need to be able to read out the questions, and write down your answers. Not rocket science, so asking the caller for their qualifications is frankly, pretty idiotic.

Also note, that all the people conducting the survey are callling from this 0488 number. If you try ringing it, it will divert to the 1800 023 040 number. Again, this is very common and cost effective practice.

Every state and territory police force seeks community comment via surveys, but they themselves do not conduct the survey - Police Services are not qualified to conduct surveys. That is why they contract an organisation that is set up to design, and run surveys, and interpret the data gathered. In other words, that contracted organisation designs the survey around what sort of info is sought (in this case, how satisfied citizens are with policing and local safety); then the contractor hires the grunts who will make the calls to members of the public; then they feed all those responses into their systems and provide pretty detailed information on the required topics.

Called saying doing a survey for Australia and NZ police about our safety, When I said I'm not interested kept asking why. I hung up.

Hard to understand but claimed to be the Victorian Police doing a safety survey. I am not in Victoria!

They sent a text message ahead advising of the intention to call for a Social Survey. I never consented or asked for a call. I don't have time. It's not legit.

I called the number today (Saturday) after a missed call but the message advised only works Mon to Fri. Maybe a scam
